My Savage, REX, has a new stable mate.
He does not have a name yet, still thinking on it.

Tried to put up a photo but I was not able.
Operator error I believe.

It’s a 1971 BSA 650 Thunderbolt.
Rated at 46hp, single carb, 9:1 CR,  same cam as is in the Lightning twin carb model.
When accelerating the cam begins to be felt at 65-70, it’s a pretty quick surge…feels good.
Period magazine road tests of the time show an average top speed of 100-104.   This single carb model actually had a quicker time in 1/4 mile runs than the twin carb Lightning, but only by a few thousands.
2200 miles since rebuild.
The ride is smooth; good suspension.
Runs like a new machine.
I’m Going easy with it due to mileage, but while out for a ride yesterday I let it run from 70-90, 2/3-3/4 throttle, the effects from the cam kept getting better (it felt pretty quick), handling was rock steady at speed.  I’m anxious  to see how it performs once I’ve tended to a few things first to insure a safe ride through the sound barrier.
Tires look they should with just 2200 miles, but are old and need changing.
Found a couple of bolts loose (nothing serious) so need to check everything to be sure.
*** Everything works on this bike. ***
When I checked the oil it was CLEAN.
The tank is clean and has been treated.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase.
It was $4K and I consider this a good deal.

Congrats!
BTW, speaking of riding Beezers fast, read the second to the last chapter of Hunter Thompson’s ‘Hells Angels’.
Def the best :-)

Since it's a Thunderbolt, I'll toss "ZEUS" out there.  REX and ZEUS!

Not that green of a color, mine has some brown in it, it’s a military green-brown color.  About 3/4 green and 1/4 brown as seen directly with the eye.

As a teenager, my brother had a Honda 160. I had a 1965 Ducati scambler, which was right-hand shift, plus a 1-up, 3-down shift pattern, totally backwards from the Honda

My dad took my Ducati out one day. He remembered the shift pattern, but forgot which side. He pulled out of the driveway rather briskly, then went to shift. Instead, he stabbed the brake pedal and locked up the rear wheel as he was still leaned over from pulling out. Luckily, he recovered and didn't go down.

As I recall the left side shifter was deemed safer and that’s when it was changed to match all other motorcycles. A new industry standard. It never bothered me , one unintended shift , then the brain kicks in and gets with the plan , takes a minute getting feet to cooperate. Away we go !

You adjust to the brake/shifter change in no time at all.

*****

I was just referring to the process of teaching your body to adjust to the shifter being on the right and the brake on the left…developing muscle memory.  It’s the same with learning to fly a helicopter, but that adds another dimension to the mix.  [ch128526][ch127949][ch128641]

When I was in flight school, on the first day when we actually got into the cockpit and began to learn to fly, there were about 30 aircraft scattered about on a practice airfield.  Think of all 30 aircraft in the hands of 18-22 year olds who have never laid a hand on a helicopter.  Watch the video of this dude and multiply that by 30X.  It was a giant Royal clusterf___  that went on for an hour, then the next student would take his turn.  It started all over again.  The redeeming factor for us students were the instructors who took their life in their hands by training a bunch of newbies.  The only difference between us and the crazy dude in this video is we had good instructors to save our butts when we tried to kill ourselves.
To solo a helicopter required 10-20 hours of flight time before they released us to scare ourselves to death as we made 3 rounds of the traffic pattern to qualify a successful solo flight.  No one died, we cheated death again.

It was a 30 ring circus.

Post by LANCER on 08/24/23 at 19:07:01

Controls in a helicopter:
1.  Cyclic stick-controls forward, back, left & right lateral movement
2.  Pedals-(anti-torque pedals) counteracts the torque of the main rotor and rotates the aircraft left & right about a central axis
3.  Collective-vertical movement up and down

All body parts are involved all the time.
It’s great fun.

Flying them is more affordable if you’re in the military and getting paid to fly.
