Title: Shorted Starter motor
Post by Fabricio Bino on 04/29/23 at 11:09:24

Hello everyone,

Some days ago my bike would not start, i heard clicks from the starter relay but the starter motor didnt even try to turn.

I did all the tests that are extensible described in the forum, and isolated the problem in the starter. i setup a battery with 12.6v directly connected to the starter, out of the bike. Battery voltage would drop to 0.6v and not a single life sign from the starter.

So I took it to some motor repair shop, and they told me it was shorted, but did not tell me where it could be, so i took it home and opened and tested it myself.

I tested the inside part from the motor, tested electric continuity from the rotor axis to its body around the coil, tested ok, from the body around the coil to the commutator where the brushes touch, tested ok, and (most) of each commutator plate against each other, tested ok as well.

I decided to assemble everything back together and give another try. No luck.

Then I decided to measure continuity from the positive bolt, where we hook up the battery and the outside body of the motor, that we bolt to the engine.

Its somehow shorted.

Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-6Jm3IfHG8

Have you had any similar problems?

Sorry for the long description and possibly bad English
