Title: NEED BALANCER/FLYWHEEL INFO
Post by barnett468 on 08/02/22 at 13:27:39

Hello, I have a rattling noise in my engine when I accelerate and read on the forum that it sometimes the nut holding the flywheel (or maybe it was the balancer) came loose allowing the flywheel (or balancer) to rattle.

I looked at the parts fiche and saw the balancer but can not see it on the bike. Where exactly is it located?

I did not see the flywheel in the parts fiche, however, on the backside of the rotor that holds the magnets, there is a large 5/88" thick piece of steel that looks like the lightweight flywheels that Dave posted photos, so I am wondering if this piece is the flywheel?

There is also another 1/2" thick piece of metal behind the large starter gear, so I am wondering if this might be it?

Is there anyway to feel the flywheel to see if it is loose without removing the rotor?

Why does the marts fiche not show a flywheel?

Thanks for any info.

IF the flywheel is loose - it is most noticeable and loudest at idle.  As the rpm increases the noise becomes tolerable....and at a steady 60mph it is not really noticeable.

The flywheel is that big piece of round steel behind the starter gear.

When my flywheel nut came loose folks could hear the rattle of my bike long before they could hear the muffler.

The flywheel is shown in the illustrated parts breakdown on the "starter clutch" illustration.  They're organized alphabetically.

Here you see the starter gear.  The flywheel is behind the starter gear.  The alternator rotor has been removed.

Here is the flywheel.  The starter gear has been removed to expose the flywheel.

This is the balance shaft bolt.  It is located on the right side of the engine.  It's under the clutch cover, just below the oil filler cap.

This is the primary drive gear nut.  It's left-hand threads.  Be careful with this one.  If you over torque it, you will crush and shatter the cam drive sprocket.

DBM, your lore of these motors never ceases to amaze me.   ;)
