Title: Garage parked since 2016: Fix & Keep or -?
Post by nj7171 on 07/11/22 at 12:10:19

Hello everyone!

I have the 2014 S40, that I rode for a year. Since then it was parked in the garage in New Jersey weather. Unfortunately I ignored it and never had any maintenance done to it - left over fuel, old oil, etc.  :(

My question is - should I fix it or sell it in as-is condition?
I started planning basic maintenance but I am afraid I may be opening a can of worms that becomes much bigger project than I can handle and also considering the cost.

So far I am considering below list to get it to a point where I can start the engine:
- new battery fully charged
- oil change
- brake fluid change
- drain fuel tank and add fresh fuel

Additional information that may be useful:
- My experience: I am pretty handy but no mechanical experience.
- I did enjoy riding it (for at least 1 year). At some point I do plan to upgrade.
- Miles on the bike: ~750.
- Body condition: Like new. Never dropped and no scratches

Thank you!

- Niraj

I wouldn't do any "maintenance" until you get it running.

  • I would make sure there is oil, but not change it yet.
  • Put some fresh fuel in the tank.
  • Remove the fuel line from the carb and make sure fuel is making it to the carb.
  • Put a jumper box on it and see if it will run.  (Maybe use either to get it to fire.)

The major issue you might run into is that the carb might be boogered up and require a good cleaning or possibly need replaced to get it running.

I buy bikes from people who have let them sit and can’t get them running. It usually takes me a few hours of time to get them running, and then I sell them for double what I buy them for. It’s easy money.

Fix the bike.

I'm no expert on this (I rely on the guys here), but some fogging oil or other such lubricant is indicated down the spark plug hole before trying to get the piston moving in the cylinder.  Blow out any debris in the spark plug recess before you back it out to keep the stuff from dropping in there.
These are just a couple tips I've read on here numerous times.

Naturally, check the oil. If it's over full,it's probably because the petcock died. That would mean gas in the oil.
The carburetor bowl is probably empty. Put it on Prime.
Use ether or something, brake parts cleaner, whatever will get it to light off. No reason to work the starter for longer than necessary.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I guess fixing it up seems to be the way to go!

Any experts within Central Jersey area who would want to lend some hand?  :D

I'm just north of Clinton. If you can get the bike to my garage, I'll get it running for you.
