Title: Brake line fill from empty: not filling. Post by danyboy on 04/10/22 at 06:54:23 Recently bought a 2002 Savage. Front brake pads were worn real bad, oil was pitch black. Installed new pads, drained oil. Can't seem to fill, container stays full even if bleed nipple is screwed off. Did this before but I forget. What am I doing wrong ? >:( |

Post by verslagen1 on 04/10/22 at 08:18:40 yep, you got air in the master and it's not going to flow w/out a little help. vacuum bleeder is probably the most reliable way to get it going. but you can try this, put the palm of your hand on top of the reservoir and push down, take your hand off w/out lifting. this may take several times but it's worked for me. |

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/10/22 at 08:30:30 If you have a nebulizer or small compressor you can hook up to the intake with small tubing, that will draw fluid. Some brass tubing in and out of a mason jar and shazzam, you have a reservoir that holds fluid, protecting your pump. You can bleed brakes all by yourself. |

Forgot to mention, emtied everything .before filling, container, hose, caliper and took the piston out,cleaned the inside of the caliper real well, the piston and put the piston back in, all the way in. No bleeder pump yet,I pumped the handle,bled by the bleeding nipple for about4 hours.line is full. Oil coming out of bleeder nipple all right but Still no pressure. Piston never moved ( could see the inside pad was all the way in. What bugs me is I did this before and don't recall having to pump for so long. |

Some stiff wall tubing and it should pull enough down into the piston of the master cylinder to be able to bleed it,, Be worth a coupla bucks,, eh? |

Post by verslagen1 on 04/11/22 at 18:43:05 take the top connection off, this will remove all back pressure from the system. squeeze the lever, use your thumb to seal the end, release the lever repeat releasing your thumb while squeezing. once you see any flow, replace the top connection. |

It does help to reduce the time it takes to bleed the air out of the brake system, but it doesn't fix an existing problem. From my experience, a brake system that wont prime/bleed is one in need of a rebuild. Usually the master cylinder is the culprit. Have you tried priming the master to see if it makes pressure? How do you prime the master you ask? Remove the brake line from the master. Place a finger over the brake line exit port on the master. Add just a little fluid and begin pumping, allowing air to escape while compressing the lever, and covering the port with your finger when releasing the lever. If you don't get a shot of fluid within just a few strokes, it's time to rebuild the master. If you get a successful prime, then bleeding will not be a problem - even without any other methods mentioned above. If it still wont bleed, then it's time to look at the caliper or even the brake line itself. A properly functioning brake system does not require a vac, syringe or anything else - other than proper technique - to prime and bleed. |

Took the master cylinder apart, cleaned it well, took the caliper apart again, piston out, cleaned it again. Took piston out and back in several times. Put everything back together. Brakes are now smooth and are working super well. Never needed a vacuum. Thanks to all for your help. |
