Title: Re: Shinko Post by Dave on 03/29/22 at 03:03:41 In the stock Savage tires sizes, the 230 Tourmaster is the tire I use and recommend, as it wear pretty well and has a modern looking tread profile. The 712 and 777 are popular choices. The 250 has nearly identical tread to the 712 with a bit more grooves in the tread.....I don't know much about it yet. The tires all perform pretty similarly. |
Title: Re: Shinko Post by springman on 03/29/22 at 07:54:34 I can vouch for the 712 and the 230, both very good tires. I've read good things about the 777 and have no experience/knowledge on the 250. Shinko in general though seems to make pretty good tires. Oh, I do prefer the 230 over the 712 on the front. On the back they are pretty equal. |
Title: Re: Shinko Post by MMRanch on 03/29/22 at 18:36:43 Hay guys , I've got the Shinko 250's front and reaar on my Savage now. You'll see them in a few weeks. The front is the 90/90-19 (MT-90) and I put it on at the same time that I put a new 712 on the rear ( the 712 didn't come in 90/90 so the 250 looks close enough so I got it. Well The 712 Rear wore out while the 250 front still looks new ??? Ya'll know I don't use the rear brake for stoping ... only the front. Idea being "shift all the wear I can to the front" So I went to get a 250 for the rear ... welll it don't come in 120/90 so I got a 130/90-16 (MT-90) ... it is Huge ! I had to put my original front pulley on to get more belt room in the swing-arm. Even then there is barrely a half inch between the tire and swing arm. So the 250 rear is a dual profile with the middle being wide and the edges rounding off rather sharply. If it last a long time I'll buy another one. ;) The front has a single radius on it and feels good leaning over with easy turn in ! :) |
Title: Re: Shinko Post by springman on 03/30/22 at 10:31:40 That is pretty much what I have seen with the 712. I get somewhere around 9K-10K miles on the rear and almost double on the front. |
Title: Re: Shinko Post by ohiomoto on 03/30/22 at 15:58:24 Fronts always outlast the rears. I always expect to go through at least 2 rear tires for every front. |

It does seem to be that way for the cruiser type tires that fit the Savage....even when I went to the 130/70-18 rear and 90/90-18 front it was true and I could get 2 back tires to every front tire. It doesn't always work that way on the tires that fit sport and sport touring bikes (180/55-17 rear and 120/70-17 front). On two different bikes I have worn out the Michelin Road 4 and Road 5 front tires a few thousand miles before the rear tires.........it could be the large amount of channels they have for dispersing water. The Continental Road Attack 3 tires I have on the bike right now appear to be the more normal scenario where the rear wears out first. |
