Title: Cerakote exhaust coating
Post by Dave on 03/13/22 at 04:03:51

I sprayed some Cerakote last week on a piston crown.  It is considerably more expensive than high temperature exhaust paints like VHT and similar spray cans - and it does require that you own a small "touch up" size spray gun.  It does however go on really easily and the durability is really impressive.  (I have used VHT on headers and it holds up OK until you ride in the rain).  The 4 oz tester is likely plenty to do a couple of Savage headers.....it covers very well and sprays easily - but it is very stinky and requires good ventilation.  (When I sprayed the pistons I did it outdoors - but even bringing them in the garage to cure was too stinky and I moved them back outdoors).  The paint on the headers takes 5 days to fully cure.

Yes it comes in chrome - but that requires baking in an oven and polishing in a ceramic tumbler to get the shiny surface.

When you send your parts to companies like Jet Hot this is the process they use for your parts.

I had no idea that was even a possibility.
What is

Why do you want that?
Is it worth it?

The Cerakote is a thermal barrier......it may not do much of anything in a Savage engine.

I have never used the product, but from some things I have read exposure to fume is very dangerous. Not just exposure to the atomized spray, but the fumes from the spraying and initial cure. I have seen it said that if you can smell it, you have had a potential over exposure. Extra caution may be appropriate around using it.

I would not use anything like that without a painters respirator. It's just a rubber mask with a couple of quality filters. I use them when I'm using two stage paint.
Slapped the mask on. Went to work. I could taste the chemicals. Opened a new pack of filters,no taste or smell.. About thirty bucks, if the hardware store doesn't have any go to the paint store, like Sherwin Williams, or the store that supplies local body shops.

Money , Money , Money ... but it sure does look Good !   :)
:................

I've used that rattle can chrome for non heated items it's OK .

I've got the overheated stainless steel look for now.  ::)

So

If a person was building a drag-race bike and was planning to burn nitreous  oxide ... then ... coating the piston(s) with a heat shield might be a good idea ?      :-?
