I just measured my timing chain tensioner today on my new to me Savage, and using the method shown in the tech section, I am right about 16 mm, ( actually 15.87mm). I was dreading it, but it was surprisingly quick, and easy. I put it back together, and rode a little today. How many miles should I ride before checking it again ? Most of my riding will be short local trips. Thanks

It would be helpful to know how many miles it took you to get to 16mm.

The bike has 6,800 miles. I bought it at the end of December, and have only ridden it a few times. I have put less than 100 miles on the bike personally. I don't know what kind of life it lived previously, but the guy I got it from bought it as his first bike, and learned to ride on it .

based on 7000 miles and 16mm out, you should check it at 13000 miles.

if you ride 5 miles at a time then it could be worse.
if you ride 50 miles at a time then it will be better.

Thanks for the information, and the peace of mind. I live 5 miles from town, and the vast majority of my street bike riding is looking for things to do in town, but I inherited my childhood home about 17 miles away, and do ride out there a good bit. It will take a long time to get the bike up to even close to 13,000, but I will probably check it before spring of next year, because it will be almost all short rides . I am expecting my new main jets 147.5, and 150 in a day, or two, and cleaning, and jetting the carb will be next on my list. I was on the fence about a different muffler, but will probably end up getting one. I was surprised by the sheer weight of the exhaust when I removed it today. I can't figure Suzuki's thinking on this bike. They over built it in some ways, and then skimped on things like a trip odometer. I can understand not having a fuel gauge, but that makes a trip odometer even more inportant.

Trip odometer is an easy fix, there are speedometers with the trip odometers that mount at the handlebars that can be easily adapted. One from an Intruder is almost a direct bolt on, or you can go with the universal aftermarket models.

Not knowing how much fuel you have or how far you have gone........makes the Savage an Adventure Bike!

I keep a fine point sharpie marker with a few feet of masking tape wrapped around the middle in my riding jacket pocket. Every time I fill up I add 100 to the odometer reading,write that number on a little pice of tape and stick the tape to the back of the brake master cylinder. When that number matches the number on the odometer I start looking for gas. Nothing to remember, glance at the tape and the odo every now and then and I always know when it's time for a fuel stop.

I got the best trip odo money can buy... but it's on the BMW next to me. ;D

If that doesn't work out then I plan on having more gas than the other savages. 8-)

Why so worried about fuel? You ride in the on position until you have to put it on reserve, on reserve I get about 15 miles until dead(raptor petcock).

Use a fine point indelible laundry marker which you can store easily on the bike and write the odometer reading on the glass after filling (last three figures, not tenths), where you can always compare it to the current odometer reading.

After filling a drop of petrol on a paper towel cleans off the old marker.

Riding around town at lowish throttle settings there is a bit of warning before having to go onto reserve -- a little surging etc
Riding on the highway is a bit different ---. sudden cutout which if you are in the fast lane can be a bit disconcerting fumbling for the petcock while looking for what is coming up behind at speed .
