Title: Front rotor rubbing on caliper mount
Post by BlakieG on 11/09/21 at 20:36:29

Hey all. Thanks for the add. Just got a new to me 2014 S40 that only has 180 miles on it. Was out for a ride and heard some metal on metal rubbing in the front wheel. Realized that the rotor is rubbing directly on the caliper mount. Brake works fine and the pads and caliper look good. Wondering if this is a common issue or if I just have a bad rotor.

Is it rubbing on the outside of the rotor, or are the pads rubbing?
If the rotor is rubbing on the caliper mount, the axle spacer(s) are messed up.

Sure sounds like your axle spacers are swapped left to right. It is easy to mix them up, more than a few people have done that before.

Both spacers have a sheet metal shield that covers the bearings.
The spacer on the disk side has a flange that goes against the fork.

Also, the caliper bolts have 2 washers for each bolt.
Some adjustment can be achieved by placing 1 or both between the fork and caliper.

That is a really clean hand you have.

My hands haven't been that clean for several decades!

Axle spacers.

So finally got the bike up on a lift and spun the front tire. Found that about 35% of the rotor is rubbing on the caliper mount so I suspect a warped rotor over axel spacers. Ordered a new one so will see if that corrects the issue. Thank you to all for your suggestions. I'm hoping to get a few more rides in this year before winter consumes South Dakota.

A warped rotor is unlikely. If the bike is still on the lift, I’d remove the caliper and check for side-to-side motion of the front wheel. I suspect worn wheel bearings over a warped rotor. The brakes on the S40 just don’t have enough power to warp a rotor.

If I did suspect a warped rotor, I would use a dial gauge to check the rotor, not a simple spin of the wheel.

Gary,  I have seen one of the older 4 speeds that had a warped rotor. It wasn't warped real bad, but enough to make hard braking unpredictable.
