Title: Subaru/Savage Piston Compatibility Test
Post by Murphdawg on 10/07/21 at 16:20:00

Hi everyone,

So after reading through a ton of old threads on the pistons options for the LD650 I saw someone had brought up the idea of using a Subaru piston (same bore/pin and possiblyy rings? Anyway with a 10.5:1 compression rating and a cheap alternative I started to do a little more research.

Meaning I called a local shop found some old pistons they had and were willing to donate. I never saw anyone else actually pull the trigger on this (correct me if I am wrong) but thought I’d give it a go and report back with findings of this endeavor.

Anyway about to head over there and grab some so I’ll report back.

If nothing else, this will be interesting. Good Luck and I must say a real reach in looking for sources of upgrade parts. Would we call it a Subuski?

I for many years had an old school Subaru wagon and was constantly impressed by the simplicity of their design and engineering. Not to say it was not impressive, but it was well thought out as to the forethought of how little internal engine damage was done by some other failures.

I'm very interested in what you find out.  Please post some pictures when you get your hands on the piston.

What size is the piston, 94mm, 95mm, 96mm, 97mm, etc.?

Can you measure the compression height (center of wrist pin to top of piston)?
