When I first got mine, I seriously felt like I needed a tach. By the time ID found one, I didn't think I needed it. Ride it a while, get used to the sound and watch the speed.. You'll be changing gears without even thinking about it.

I spend most of of my riding time looking for things that might kill me, so I just let the bike tell me when it needs to be shifted. It does a pretty good job of that.

But that not what you asked so I'll shut up now. haha :)

I ordered a tach from Drag Specialties two days ago My jet kit came today which I will be installing as soon as my new handlebars get here. Trying to do it all at once. I have no problem feeling and hearing the engine and knowing when to shift up or down. I really would like to know 1200 RPM when it is 1200 RPM so I have the idle speed correct and can adjust the air mixture screw more precisely. It would also help to know for sure if I'm in 4th or 5th gear. I've only owned the bike just over 3 months and have put 850 miles on it. It's my first bike. Did I mention that I'm 86 years old. Thanks for the help and comments.

You have to drop the idle to adjust the idle air

Yeah. I understand you want to adjust the idle after a good 10 min ride at a low RPM ,bike vertical ,airscrew clockwise until a slight RPM drop then back out to a smooth idle. then increase RPM to 1100 to1200 RPM with the idle screw. Basic stuff.
