Title: Carburetor Selection
Post by Dreanimal on 08/23/21 at 05:39:18

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, I tried searching but couldn't find any topics.

I'm new to carburetors, I've done EFI tuning on vehicles so I'm familiar with fuel mapping.  I'm looking to upgrade the carb/intake on my S40 (currently only has a supertrapp exhaust) and I've been a bit overwhelmed by the CV, VM, TM styles along with the different diameters for each.  Is there a quick guide that shows what will fit and what will require modification?

Thanks.

The simplest solution is a properly adjusted OEM (CV) carb. If there is something that you do not like about the performance of OEM carb, then an alternative could be the solution.

For a mostly stock engine (and an aftermarket exhaust is mostly stock) the CV can be adjusted to work flawlessly.

Thank you for the input.  What are the pros/cons of the different style carbs?  I'm extremely interested in tinkering with this platform and I'm looking for a carb with a bit of head room over stock.

This old post is a comparison of four different carbs.  I did it before I developed a more robust test program but it should give you an idea of what's available and how they stack up.

This more recent post does a better test of the Keihin PWK38.  It's a bargain and it runs great.

There should be plenty of pictures that show overhead clearance.  The S&S Supe E provides the most overhead clearance, but it's a very difficult installation and doesn't run nearly as good as the metric mixers.

Good luck, Mike

This is exactly what I was looking for.  Thanks!  it sounds like the Mikuni VM will be the best bet for me.
