Title: Rattlin' Header ?
Post by zipidachimp on 08/19/21 at 22:42:14

Whenever I hit/tap my header it rattles like crazy. Sounds as if the inner pipe is loose but both ends are tight. Sure hate to replace it as I had it ceramic coated 3 years ago. Anyone else seen this?
Cheers!  8-)

Yes - One other member had the interior pipe disintegrate from the outer pipe.

I wonder if the ceramic coating might have trapped too much heat and kept the inner pipe too hot.

I have heard that wrapping pipes is not good for the durability of a single wall pipe.  When the engine is run really hard the heat wrap can create a condition where the wrapped pipe is so hot it gets thermally challenged and can get almost molten......and ultimately it leads to the pipe getting weak and cracking.

Humidity kills metal...
Even here in AZ,.. the first Harley muff I put on went after 15k miles.  I downshifted and shot the center baffle plate out the rear on an afterfire (saw it fly in my rearview mirror)... like a mini cannon...  ;D
We don't have the constant humidity of many places here, but the wide variance of temperatures between day and night causes condensation in tanks and mufflers.
Rust kills...

I won't change it until I cancel the insurance in November. Maybe e-pay to the rescue !
Cheers!  8-)
ps: 'ceramic' looks so much better than 'wrap' !
