Title: after fire
Post by thomas forresttforrest on 07/19/21 at 16:21:03

how to adjust the carburetor air screw after muffler change to prevent after fire on throttle roll back during shifting or decelerating.      Just got the info I needed in the tech section  I'm just learning how to use this site. Be patient.

1st, check the muffler and header connections for air leaks.
those will cause after-fires at shift change or decel.

I agree, when ever I get roll off exhaust popping, I have a loose header pipe.

For me, it's always been leanness on the idle circuit. Richen the mixture screw and shim the needle.

If you have the idle set high enough, it should minimize some of the after fire.  And you can try practicing to not completely roll off the throttle when shifting.  That helps, too.

And be careful checking the acorn nuts on the header pipe at the cylinder.  They don't need to be tightened down hard. It's easy to cause some damage.  Just a 1/4" drive socket and use only fingertips on the handle.

Removed the plug by stepping up from a5/64th to a1/8th to a3/16th in drill. The plug spun out after the second turn of the last drill Very easy. Warmed up the engine well than started backing out the screw 1/2 turn at a time. The RPM peaked at two turns which is 2 3/4 total turns. Idle speed went to about 1200 rpm Adjusted that back to around 600 I guess. Throttle response is good in both directions and idle is steady after a quick rollback. Still getting some after fire on quick rollbacks. My neighbor has a Suzuki sport bike and he loves the sound. the muffler is a HD FXD from a 2009 super glide I didn't realize when I bought it on e bay that it was a Calf. muffler, The parts guy at the local HD dealer said it would be quite. Not so. good tone semi loud soft mellow throb. This is my first motorcycle I purchased 2 months ago with 380 miles on it. A 2016 s4o with many changes in 2 mos.  Did I mention that I'm 86 years old.

Welcome!!!
Before anyone jumps up and yells at you, turn the idle back up to 1200 and NEVER let it idle on the sidestand!!!!!
The oil pump is weak below 1100 or so rpm, and can not lube the cam properly. We have seen bikes come thru here with destroyed top ends at unbeliveable low mileages.
Other than that,,, ride on...............
