Title: What Fuel Grade Do You Prefer for your Savage/S40?
Post by SCS40 on 06/19/21 at 16:56:07

I realize these bikes only call for regular fuel, but I was wondering if anyone regularly uses mid, premium, and/or Top Tier Fuel. Shell makes a lot of bold claims about their premium, which is also Top Tier. Top Tier (in general) also makes many bold claims and have (some) evidence in support. However, what they don't point out in the study they love to cite is combustion chamber deposits actually increased compared to LAC fuels.

I'm personally leaning toward non-ethanol fuel for my bike.

Thoughts?

Unnecessary poll/post. This has been covered to death.  Use the search function.

I did. Several attempts actually. The search function...wasn't helpful.

I don't think it's been done to death, but I also don't think it's very useful info.

In 1 local or another regular might be the worst gas to get cause it's old or full of water and other crap.
But to say your bike with 8.5 compression ratio needs premium because it's got racing stripes...   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Lol on racing stripes.

I used Google and do see several older threads, mostly on the Premium debate, and a good amount on pure v. E10. FWIW, I'm considering Shell's Premium not for power, but for the additive package (corrosion, etc).

I don't really see anything on Top Tier fuels. I think these are a great idea and most major brands are TT. However, this standard is mainly to combat intake valve carbon from GDI engines. According to the AAA "independent" study, it does so marvelously. However, although the data is included in the study, the fact combustion chamber deposits actually increased isn't mentioned.

So, it seems to me LAC fuel, regardless of octane, is better for any EFI or carbed engine.

As for the price difference, I'll have to pay closer attention but it seems Premium and Pure and pretty close locally.

Finally, I'll pose the question of timing advance on our bikes as I didn't see that mentioned in the previous related threads. Do our bikes have knock sensors?

If not, octane rating truly is moot as the only real advantage WITH a sensor is the timing being advanced a few degrees with higher octane.

I guess that's ramble enough. I suppose I'll try a full tank (or two) of Pure and compare to Shell's Premium (which is the only one I'd consider using. Perhaps I'll even take them up on the challenge and run a borescope down the hole (before v. after).

There's a premium package labeled as S40a, comes with EFI, automatic choke, auto canceling signals and abs.  There was only 1 made, it self started and launched itself into the ocean.   :-?
BTW the self starting feature is standard on all models.

Lol. A rare bird indeed. I’d love to see any EFI machine with an automatic choke. Was a curious looking bird painted on the tank or side covers?  :P
