So my scoot came with a neat seat of under seat detachable bags with all hardware. Yet the "flap" appears it will cover an important looking electronic component. Any risk of damage to this?

You are referring to the rectifier. This needs to be able to have air flow over it to cool. I have similar bags and what I did is remove the rectifier, install the bags, and screw down the recifier over the top of the flap (may need longer screws?). When you do this you have to make sure the rectofoer isn't sitting too high where the seat is pressing too hard on it. added some rubber bumpers to the bottom of my seat to hold it off the rectifier but I tend to do overkill and you may not need this.

The big heavy steel fender acts as a "heat sink" and allows the rectifier/voltage regulator to transfer heat to the fender. When you put the saddlebag material between the two you are reducing the ability of the heat transfer to occur.

It would be best if you could leave the device bolted to the fender, and just cut away a bit of your saddlebag. If you don't want to remove all the material - at least cut away enough to provide air flow.

Got this done today but was rushed, hot, sweating, cursing, and (sorry) no pics. However, the procedure was straightforward. I basically trimmed out the middle of the yoke to fit around the rectifier, and disconnected/reconnected the pigtails leading forward. It's a snug fit and I'm sure I lost some strength in the yoke but I also don't plan to carry bowling balls.

These are River Road bags and very similar to these. I don't think they were ever used but included the rails.

I like the way they look, love the storage, and the zip-off feature. And they make the little S40 look a tad bigger. :)
