Title: Questions about the 'head plug'
Post by rong on 03/04/21 at 16:47:29

Hello everyone,

I have a 2015 S40 with 8000 miles.

In a previous question, Dave indicated some common things that will eventually go wrong with the Savage.  One of the items was that the 'head plug' will eventually begin to leak.

My questions about the 'head plug':
1.  Is there a general mileage time frame when it begins leaking?
2.  Is the leak critical enough to require it to be repaired... or will it run ok even if it continues to leak.  For example, I know some motorcycles with leaks that really don't hurt them at all from running.  Ie, it is simply a cosmetic issue rather than one that must be fixed to run correctly.

Hopefully, someone can direct me to a link to the 'head plug' so I can read up on it.

Thanks for your help.
Ron G

You have been a member since 2012....and you don't know about the Tech Section? :-?

Some head plugs weep for a long time and aren't a big issue unless you don't like the smell of hot oil on an air cooled engine.

Other times they leak a lot - and soak the bike, your pants legs and boots with oil.

Thanks for the information Dave.  Yes, I  have been to the tech section many times.  I was hoping to find some links to discussions about the head plug, ... discussions on how long it lasts, ... personal experiences, etc.

However, your descriptions on what  happens when it goes bad was quite helpful.

It seems like I read in a discussion group somewhere that around 20,000 miles was the general mileage time frame for it to begin to do it's dirty work (at least for that one individual).    :-)

Thanks for your help,
Ron G
