Title: Sidecar Update
Post by Dennisgb on 10/06/20 at 13:14:48

The Sidecar is mounted and I actually took it for a spin [ch128512] it actually handled pretty good. Heavy steering but not bad. It rolls nice and is easy to move around.

A few things to clean up and adjust but it will be going into storage until spring as I Have a ton of other work to do before winter. My brand new exhaust baffle blew out while I was warming it up [ch128563]

Here are some pictures.

ill be honest im kinda jealous as ive wanted a sidecar for a while now.  ive figured with the stock rake it might be kinda heavy steering, but sidecars are usually a workout anyway :)

Looks like a lot of fun. Why the steering damper on front fork?

This one.  I want this one!

Savage?  Boulevard?  Bike?  Type of sidecar?

I own a 2017 Boulevard S40

Like to know more about this bike/kit/year/etc.

I’ve heard a lot of people who have said the fork rake might be a problem. Not sure why. Most sidecar and trike builders sell rake kits to make steering EASIER. I think the rake is a good thing as long as the wheel lead is set properly. The heavy steering I’m feeling right now is related to toe in. I needed to get the rig on flat ground to adjust

Steering damper is pretty common on sidecars and trikes. There is a problem with wobble at slow speed when taking off. The damper cleans that up.

The sidecar is a 2004 Cozy that was on a Royal Enfield that was lost in my shop fire. I bought the 2011 S40 specifically for the sidecar because it was made for a Thumper and I wanted to put it back on the road.[ch128512] I fabricated the mount and used some of the RE parts and some purchased.

Cool!

You might like the way it handles with a set of wider bars.  The bike steers so much easier at slow speeds with them.   I have used a set of EMGO "super bars" that worked well and currently have a set of LSL flat tracker bars that I love.  Of course you'll need to get standard risers to go that route. An added bonus is that they will make the bike look a little more "RE" than the stock drag bars and fit right in with the beautiful paint scheme your bike has.

Here is my modified bike with the LSL flat trackers.  I'm guessing they are about as tall as the stock drag bars.

This is my bike with the "super bars".  They sit lower and bring you more forward.  The forks are lowered 2" and I have an 18" rear wheel on it.  I though it handled a lot better than stock and at 6'3" the bars were  comfortable for me.

We encourage members to be friendly and welcoming.
But we do have to allow for folks to be human.

I bet the even the Pope has his days.  ;D

It’s actually a detriment because of drag.

I actually found your post funny [ch128516]

The truth is the only thing good about that windshield is for the passenger. I like the little racy aluminum ones.

Congratulations on getting the rig on the road! Looks fantastic, and I look forward to seeing your development, experiences, etc.

The plan is to paint the car in two tone to match the Suzuki colors. I have the paint mixed already and hoped to paint it this year but ran out of time. It will look similar to the photo below in matching colors to the bike.

Awesome!!  I love it!!  Great taste you have.   :)

As for the cables with the tracker style bars.  Mine are stock and a little too long.  But, I think my 96 would have had the bullhorns from the factory.  (The guy I got it from put drag bars on it.)  I have a stock 2006 in the garage.  I'll see if they look significantly shorter.

Yeah I think it will look awesome matching paint. Thanks for the positive comments.

Will do some searches on the drag bars to bullhorns because I think that would be the best for steering. I seem to remember reading about issues with cables tho. It gets expensive when you have to change everything to put different bars on...been there before.

It all depends on your particular configuration

I had buckhorns, I can put on dragbars or superbars with any riser.
the stock dragbar cable is 1 or 2" shorter than the buckhorns.

I just looked on partzilla and they are different part numbers.  The throttle and clutch cables are only about $25 each, but the brake line is over $100.

I'll have take at the 2006 look and see if/how much shorter they are.

Go to Vehnill USA for the hydraulic brake line - they will make it any length and any color you want for half the cost of the Suzuki part.

This was supposed to be a budget project. I was trying to put the sidecar to use after the Royal Enfield was lost in the fire.

I bought the 2011 S40 For $800. The guy said he couldn’t get it running and battery was dead because it sat for a couple years. The bike had 5000 miles. I took my power pack and it turned over so I thought it was the usual dirty carbs and the price was right so I bought it. Cleaned the carb and did the mods from this forum. It shot flames out the exhaust. I did a compression test and it was 45PSI. I ran my bore scope down the plug hole and the cylinder was scorched. I bought a cylinder, piston and rings. When I got it torn down the cam and journals were shot. Bought a used engine for the head and cam. Rebuilt the engine. Got it running nice. Added Dyna exhaust. New battery...etc.

Made subframe to mount the sidecar. Had matching paint mixed to paint the sidecar.

So gradually this has already sucked up a lot more money than I planned. It will be a nice little rig once it’s done.

At this point changing bars If I need cables and brake line + bars...and I haven’t even asked about wiring, is just too much until I get a chance to ride it enough to make a judgement on steering.

I really appreciate all the help, but had to point out that funds are getting tight so anything I put into it will have to be absolutely necessary.
