Title: Starter motor does not start the engine
Post by Urs on 10/02/20 at 14:45:47

Hi there,

I reworked my LS but now starter motir does not turn the motor. I can hear the deco solenoid, the the starter relay and voltage can be measured at the starter. But no motivation to turn the engine.
When the starter is removed, the starter turns.
I am pretty helpless now.
Any experience with such an effect? Do I need a new starter? Btw, I cleaned the starter already.

Thanks in advance for any help

Best regards
Urs

First off, you should post your general location, someone might be near enough to help in person.

''I reworked my LS''

That could mean a dozen or more things! Give some more detail, did you re-build the engine totally, or part way, or fix just one thing, what one, what did you take apart? Did it run before you started? Does it turn over if you put it in gear and turn the back wheel?
Without more info we can just guess.
My first guess would be you had the left side cover off and put the washer on the wrong shaft when re-assembling it. If you had the left side cover off check this thread-

If that is not the issue give some more details.

I’m a noob here, but stick your finger in the starter hole, can you turn those gears yourself?

You should be able to turn the gears one way....but not the other.

If you can't turn it either way - you likely put the washers on the wrong gear.

Badwolf had the solution, thank you to you.
A washer which one of my 6 pre-owned put on the starter gearwheel jammed the starter. Washer removed and the engine starts like a beauty, surprisingly responsive.

Savage is now reworked to a kind of bobber style, my project is finalized. Will be my winter bike. My next and last project will be a cafe racer based on a Honda Valkyrie.
