Title: Savage S40 Swap?
Post by CowboyPat on 09/22/20 at 09:43:58

Hey y'all, I built my bike a while back and now I'm helping a buddy of mine. He bought a savage but the motor is pretty much toast (save it for parts). But I was wondering if we are limited to just the savage bikes to pull a motor from, or can we swap in an s40 motor (I'm pretty sure they're the same but I've never looked closely at one). I believe the savage is a 96 or so, if that helps.
Thanks y'all!

Savage, LS650, S40...all (mostly) the same. The early engines were four-speed. There are differences between wire harnesses between years, nothing major. There are some design improvements along the way (the starter clutch comes to mind). Get the newest model year engine you can find and it will fit. You may have to make a change in a connector.

I just put a Savage engine in my S40. They are the same.
