I'm working on my wife's '99 Savage. The exhaust pipe shows some and the bike backfires on shut off. I've seen some suggestions about changing the jets on the carb and replacing with a Jardine exhaust, but I understand that the Jardine is a bit loud. While I don't mind loud (I have Cobra pipes on my '01 Intruder Volusia) my wife does not share my views on this. So I'm looking for a solution that keeps the stock exhaust or another muffler that isn't much louder than stock. Thanks.

First step,, make sure the exhaust flange is SNUG,, thats a source of backfire issues,,
The header to muffler joint,, check it,,
HOW its shut off matters,, let if drop to idle,, completely,

OK. Thanks. I'm definitely guilty of shutting it off as soon as I pull in the driveway. I'll try letting it idle a bit.

The repeated suggestion that is forthcoming is the harley dyna muffler. Lighter, looks a bit nicer, and most importantly doesn't sound like a beetle-bug chirping down the road. Sounds more like a real motorcycle but not obnoxious. In most cases it might not even require re-jetting. If your 99 hasn't always been in your family, you might open up the carb and verify what jets are in there just so you know.

Also, read up on the white spacer mod and air/mix screw. Finagling these two can help get rid of that backfire...maybe not 100%, but most of it anyway.

if ya stuff some muffler packing material in the front of the muffler then you might be surprised how quiet things get . ;)

when ya start the motor the packing will find its way back into the muffler where it needs to go and you might need to put more in.

I use a DB-Killer at the rear to keep the packing from going strait through , and just pack the front full of the muffler packing stuff. You can order it off ebay or go to auto zone . It works miracles' :)

Heck , you can get TOO - MUCH -TOO - TIGHTLY PACKED .
