Title: Hot rear drum
Post by FlyingH on 07/20/20 at 10:48:20

After replacing my tire, I noticed (never checked it before) that my rear drum gets hot after several miles of riding with little or no use of the rear brake.
Should I be concerned or is this normal? I can spin the wheel with no problem.
Please advice.

Did you lose the 'Gazinta' spacer? The one that gazinta the space between the pulley carrier and the hub?

I hope not. How does it look like?
And were is it located on the shaft?

How does this "Gazinta" spacer look like. Where can I find a picture!
Please advice, I don't think I should ride it in present condition.
Also, where can I buy this part?

Thanks

Suzuki part #  64733-31300
Look on Bike Bandit and see the pic

Another thought...the hub could be warm from a worn/frozen bearing. It's worth reviewing when you look for the "Gazinta"

You Had to remove the brake actuator rod,, so,, if you have it too tight,, youre draggin a brake around,,
How much pedal movement do you have?

About 2 inch, when the wheel of the ground it seems to spin free.
Could the shaft be bent a little during the process of getting the wheel out and in?

Look at the brake actuation arm on the drum, push the pedal down, let off, make sure everything is working..
Probably not dragging the brake, but look..
I don't know what else to study,, unless the exhaust is blowing on it..

Make sure the brake plate is properly seated on the swing arm.

You need to take accurate readings of the temperatures across the drum. If its a bearing, you can find it,, Or, just go in and replace them,, You did keep all the spacers in their correct places,,
Harbor Freight sells an infrared thermometer,, may not be Exact,, but itll show if some area is hotter than another,
and youve Watched the rear brake actuator arm move freely away from the Brake Engaged position as you let off the pedal?

Yes, the brake is free. No heat problem on short rides, only on longer rides or with 2 people on it. This could be a bearing problem, but with only 5K on the bike that would be much to soon.

5K is low,, but,, theres a reason for warranties,, even new stuff fails sometimes,, I think youve covered about everything it could be, except a bearing,, Is it HOt on one side, more than the other? Left side/right side?

Have you made SURE the spacers are in the correct locations,, and the bearings have a spacer between them inside the hub?

No Extra Parts after having the wheel out?

Did YOU do the install or did you let someone else do it?

I'd say if it sizzles when you spit on it, you have a problem... just warm is probably only light brake pad drag.
If the wheel spins it ain't bad.

Feel your front rotor after a ride... but don't touch it for long.. ;D

I took the wheel out and had the new tire put on it a local bike shop.
Had some difficulty getting the wheel back in (tire a little lager "90") did not help. I did not take any bearing out and put the shaft and spacers as shown
in the Table of Contents with links, under Rear brakes and wheels by Savage Greg on 07/15/05 his last picture with his correction.
Maybe the bike shop lost a part, but I did not notice it. Also it has been very hot and I am sure that did not help the situation.
Meanwhile, I will keep a eye on it when I go on my next longer ride.
Thanks everyone for your inputs and I will take it apart if necessary.

I think Row has a good idea
If you toss a bit of water on and it sizzles
Check it out
If it's just warm
I would put a finger on each side,,if one side is a bunch different, ride it and monitor ,, if it doesn't squawk, or smoke or sizzle and it free wheels okay, I'd watch it till it's time for a tire, then give it some serious study

The problem has disappiered, must have been the brake shoe that created the heat. Typically I brake with the front wheel only and apply rear as needed. Lately I have used the rear only and the problem went away!
Thanks, to everyone for your inputs on this issue.  :)

The rear arm has been known to stick.
I would disassemble, clean and re-lube it.
