Title: Pilot jet question
Post by S40 Dreams on 06/14/20 at 11:24:39

Are stages 1-4 in the progressive jetting guide (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1244217127)  based on the stock #52.5 pilot?
2018 with hd exhaust and k&n, I'm looking at stage 4. Debating going down to #50 pilot. Typicaly riding at low elevation in humid east Texas. Any suggestions?

I am in East/central Oklahoma just above you a little and I used a 52.5 pilot on a stock bike with a Dyna  muffler and both stock and pod filter and they worked great.
There is no problem trying a 50 pilot and if you just want to see how it will run.  But before you do that what is the current setting for your pilot screw ?  Is it between 1 & 2 turns out ?  With the correct pilot you should be in that range.  Is your pilot screw setting giving you the highest rpm while tuning it ?  This assumes the engine is completely warmed up before tuning; at least 10 minutes idling or ride for 2-3 mi.  Bike must be vertical for sustained idling to protect cam bearing oil supply.

I’ve never understood the stage this or stage that jetting terminology. In my world, there is “jetted correctly” and “not jetted correctly”. Jet for best throttle response for your given conditions. One stage.

Thanks! Sticking with the #52.5 pilot for now. I'll get it buttoned up and see where the mix screw falls.

Easiest way to choose a pilot jet...
If you can turn the idle mix screw all the way in and the idle doesn't drop... get a smaller pilot.
If you need the idle mix screw turned out more the 3 turns... get a bigger pilot.

PS...
Being conservative in size helps.
...the pilot makes a big difference in MPG's
Bigger jets don't make bikes faster... the correct size does.

.the pilot makes a big difference in MPG's

Did na knoe that..Thot the main jet was the main culprit,,

I find that hard to believe, unless you are cruising at 1/8 throttle - which would be what...20 mph. 90% of all riding happens on the needle. There is an overlap from 1/8 to 1/4 throttle, but as soon as the needle comes on the pilot is playing second fiddle. The main doesn't come to the party until 3/4 throttle...and at that point it's only a foot in the door.

If you are a 70+mph distance cruiser, it probably doesn't make a huge difference,... but our bike is generally a putter, not a road eater.
A lot of my riding is relaxed 30 to 50mph on slow windy roads or in town and I'm barely on the throttle.
... but also consider, when you are starting to draw the majority of fuel from the slide,.. the pilot is still open and using fuel... It's running at all speeds above idle.

Plus,... my pilot/mpg info came from a Mikuni manual I read once, a long time ago, not my tiny brain... so I'll just go with it to make myself sound clever...
;D
