Title: Is this caliper done for?
Post by Keifer on 05/08/20 at 13:24:43

For the life of me, I cannot get the crud/corrosion completely out of the grooves on this caliper.  Soaking with brake fluid and using toothbrush and plastic scrapers so I don't damage the bore.  This is as good as I can get it.  The bore itself feels smooth to the touch, but there's still a bit of stuff in the grooves.  Going to put new seals in there obviously.

Am I wasting my time trying to save this caliper?  Or you think it'll work with new seals?

Give it a try . What do you have to lose, the price of a couple of seals and your time.

As long as the Oring seats and the cup moves freely,, Its fine. Without the seal, the cup should move very freely.. Oil the seal before ya try to shove it in there.. Staining, corrosion on the outside dont matter, staining inside doesnt matter, but pitting where the seal runs isnt gonna be good once the seal gets to that spot,,It may seal, may not, might make it throough a few pads before that rough zone damages the seal enough to hurt it,,
Give it a go,, feel the lever move too easily once its bled of air,, look to see if fluid is coming out,, The picture makes me think it will go,,

I've seen worse. Get some new seals and soak them in fluid before installing. The pistons will slide right in and should seal well.

I'd try rebuilding them if they where mine.

Thanks for the opinions!  I will give it a try with my cleaning efforts and hope it holds..

Now if only it didn't take forever for parts delivery with everything these days..
