Dear members,

I have an old model savage that doesn't have the torque limiter.

Last year I replaced 1 of the gears and the startermotor, because teeth had broken out. I don,t whant that to happen again.
And I propperly ajusted my decompression solinoid.

But....
I have read here on the site, that you can also make the decompression manually. :)

Can you turn off the engine with such a manual decompression?
So that the starter gears won't break?

Yes, you can put it in neutral (so you don't have to hold the clutch) and activate the decompression and the motor will die even if you don't switch it off.

FWIW, mine didn't have the late style gear, but I adapted the later stuff. If takes a bit of minor machining, but I thought it was worth it.

I don't think so, even with a high compression head I've never experienced it. But I don't use it often.

I think rather than using a manual decomp lever, it would be better to shift the bike into neutral ,then pull the choke out just before hitting the kill switch. This drives the fuel ratio above 10:1 and no matter how hot the exhaust temperature in the header , no ignition is possible because there isn't enough oxygen.to support combustion ,at least not that I've seen in 25 years with my 95.

The damage is caused when the engine turns backward when it stops on the compression stroke.
This is not run on or dieseling.
If you don't like the manual decompression method, kill it by letting out the clutch while in gear after turning off.

I can also make a electrik push button, with which I activate the solinoid. 8-)

Pulling out the choke makes the fuel mix too rich, bringing ignition probability to zero ,no matter where the piston stops. at idle (1000 rpm ) the motor is still turning 16.6 rpm /per sec ,and where she stops nobody knows. Just pulling out the choke may kill the motor ,and the counter weight should carry the piston through TDC but even if it doesn't the mix can't explode sending the piston backward and doing serious damage to the starter gear train.

If I want to keep the gears whole; it is best to install a torqulimiter and release the clutch in gear and operate the off switch and at the same time pull out the choke,and press the electric push button to operate the decompression solinoid.

If you install the torque limiting gear(and change the side case) there is no need to do anything, hitting the stock starter button will engage the starter while trying to stop the motor ,not something you should do. a button switch to open the decomp won't damage anything.

Pardon me if I jump in here. If I want to add the torque limiter to my early bike I need just the gear, cover, and gasket. Correct?
