Title: Looking for usable rear tire sizes.
Post by Bokobob on 02/12/20 at 06:54:56

Used search function to no avail.
my bike is a 96 Savage 650
Need rear tire..per online manual size is 140 80 15.
Few are available online for a reasonable price (around $100 or less)
Will 140/90 B 15 work without any modification?
If other size would work without any modifications, please advise.

Many thanks.

Many here, including myself, run a 140 90/15 rear with no issue.  The main thing to check is making sure that the rear pillion bolt heads under the rear fender aren't close to rubbing, and if they are you just swap them for allen head cap bolts from ACE Hardware.  See image. I replaced these three bolts you can see since my saddle bag brackets added height to the stock bolt head pushing it too close to the tire. Without brackets in the way you may not need anything.

In fact, I have one with ~600 miles on it that you can have for the price of shipping from AL (I have no idea what it would be without checking).

The catch is it got a nail in it and since I don't trust punctured and patched tires on a two-wheeler (despite ours being a tube tire) I took it off and put another one on.

I will be around Myrtle Beach week of 9 March if you will be close by I can bring it with me.  I am coming from the South so I won't be passing near Charlotte.

StewMills…..many thanks...I would PM you but do not yet have 10 posts so am not yet eligible...

I'll take you up on your generous offer of the tire....How about I send you a check for $50 for shipping (or more if that does not cover it.) and once it clears you could  send the tire...I'll provide my street address by email or text...I live in Gastonia, NC 28056.

Please text me at 704 674 1846 and I'll get back to you with my street address and also get your address so I can send a check.

A thousand thanks.

At 10 posts you can PM...almost there :-)

Let me see what estimated shipping would be and let you know so you don't overpay. I will see if I can get it off the wall tonight and check to make sure it looks good (been hanging on the shop wall for 2 years) and I will check back with you maybe tomorrow.

Thank you so much....If shipping is cheaper than $50 I'd still want to pay $50 seeing as you will be going to the trouble of going through "whatever" to ship it...

I will await you reply

Hey...you are at 11 posts now  :)  Go ahead and PM me your address.

I will go by UPS maybe tomorrow and so long as it is under $50 (should be) will go ahead an ship it while I am there to save back-and-forth trips.  Small town and just a short drive from my office so no big deal either way   8-)

I do have paypal if you use those fancy tools, but check is just as well for me...I trust you.

Guy at UPS asked me, "Do you need a box?"  I said nope, not unless it is mandatory.  Slap a label on it and send it 8-)

The tire from Stew arrived today and I'll be taking it to dealer to have it installed along with a new tube.

Stew only asked me to send him the shipping cost and he went way out of his way to wrap it very expertly and also went over the shipper one or more times.

Kudos and then some to Stew.

:)

Enjoy, Bob.

Keep an eye on the Spring 2020 rides posted in the Cafe. Maybe you can come see us up in NC/TN/N-GA on one of our group rides (usually just 3-4 of us) and spend the weekend. We used to camp, still do, but we have started looking at cheap bunking more lately to make it easier on us....especially the older farts like Dave and MM  ;D ;D ;D.  I'm the baby of the group at 46 8-)

Thank you for the invite to your group ride in North Georgia and thereabouts....I am honored.  I will have to pass because I do not have the stamina nor strength to ride that far at my age.  If I went 100 miles it would be a miracle...Just can't do it anymore..Maybe someday there will be a rally where folks will stay in one spot for a few days and I could come in my cage for the fellowship..

::)

Stew......remember the evening we got the thunderstorm in north Georgia - and my leaky tent?

Sometimes comfort is more important than proving that I am still relatively durable and able to survive a night with an inch of water on the floor.

Just sayin'........ ;)
