Title: Why does my bike sound like its boiling?
Post by WunGun on 02/04/20 at 00:59:34

I think its safe to assume its not coolant. My battery is old and it did have trouble starting at work and seemed to get hot pretty quick in the mile and a half it takes to commute home. I couldn't pinpoint exactly where the noise was coming from.

Your battery should not be getting hot to touch after a ride. Yes, the battery heats up while charging, but the little airflow across the battery would dissipate the minimal heat generated.

I'd get a multi-meter on that battery and confirm that it is not getting more than 14.5 volts during charging. If it's getting more your regulator may have failed and you are in fact boiling the battery.

Is this an AGM or lead-acid battery? If it's lead-acid, check the level in each cell.

Any remarkable decrease in power, top speed?

Hold the bike upright and check the oil level.
Way high or way low will heat things up in a hurry.

I'd check the exhaust header flange/ gasket/bolts ,everything tight?

1.5 miles isn't enough to keep your battery charged (or yours)
I hope you get longer rides during the week or your bat will be flat.

Do you hear this noise while it's running or when you shut it down?

If it's after shutdown, I would be looking at the battery, maybe the crankcase/oil, or anywhere else there is fluid like the fuel tank (maybe some odd vacuum??).

If it's while running, it's possible you are hearing lower end noise like roller bearings, clutch, or something else making noise.

Sorry should have clarified better. The engine itself seemed hot not the battery though I didn't touch the battery I'm not sure. Yes there was a drop in power as it had trouble going past 35-45 mph, it would however it delayed for 5-10 seconds if given full throttle.
I do take it on longer trips so it does get frequent opportunity to heat the oil.

I wonder if you might be trying to shift to early with a cold engine . try raising  your shift points by 5-10 mph that might stop the hesitation , going to WOT will compound the problem .

Next time it happens open your gas cap,... it might be a clogged tank vent.

Sounds a little bit like sticky throttle slide.  Maybe a petcock, but it's still not clear what this boiling sound you hear is and when you hear it.  Until then, we can just throw poop at the wall and hope it sticks.  Good luck with that.  haha

Maybe it's the sound of the chrome begging to be polished?

I just had the same thing happen, it was the oil leaking out the dreaded head plug an boiling on my find.

My throttle slide is sticking. Every time the throttle cap happens i open the top of the carb and the slide wont move and needs to be gently pried out with a screwdriver. after its removed it slides just fine until i take it out for a 10-15min minute ride. I noticed it had a very slight amount of play.

Is the needle bent? If you roll it on a flat surface is there a rise to it? I would not ride a bike that has the potential to have a throttle (slide) stuck open.

I was having that trouble last year.  It seemed like every day or so it would get stuck.  Not stuck like a fingerprint, stuck like some grit was between the slide and the body.  Cleaned out everything, airbox, rubber duckies, and tubes leading to the carb.  No joy.  So I started using injector cleaner in the gas, and as long as I kept using it, it didn't stick.
Started with an ounce per tankful and weened it to 1/2 ounce.  Haven't used it for a couple of months.

If your bike is stock ,your carb may be running lean for your elevation, that would cause it to run hot.

Uhm, my whole engine heats up after a ride. The battery storage is hot to the touch. :o

within a half hour, your battery should be fully charged and minimal current running thru it.
if you're only riding 10/15 minutes, yeah it's going to be warm/hot and it's not fully charged.

I'd check the voltage while you're on the go.  if it's over 14v you got problems.

and if it's below 12 volts you have a problem.

I'll do a test drive today and check it.

Ill try that injector cleaner. To be clear it is stuck closed or at least mostly closed. The engine will rev to high rpm the bike just doesn't move any faster and i mean it doesnt move faster at all. If i get the slide unstuck then both the slide and the bike move as it should until i take it out again. The needle doesnt seem bent and slides into the hole as it should. would bad gas do this? My voltage shows about 13.2 volts while running.

Sounds like a clutch

It is 13,5 volts when idling. 13,85 or something after riding for a while with lights on.

The box gets hot after bike has been turned off. Just heat creeping in during cool off period. Temperature is about 45 celsius max.
