New Zealand is destroying military-style guns after ban...

How hard was that?

It's not hard for a country with that population count, with no guarantee of firearm ownership within it's Constitution and has a very small criminal firearms industry.

Lets drop 8 million firearms into criminal hands over there and see how they do.

"We choose not to do this thing, because it would be hard"

It's not choosing to do something based off of difficulty, its an issue of saying it's not hard to begin with.

Since the confiscation and destruction of weapons was easy in Country A, then it is easy in Country B.  We all know that is not how things work, it is a poor comparison.  This is no different than pro-gun stating how well guns work out in Israel with inaccurate claims of who is even armed.

Palmetto State Armory - The owner who is a veteran says he sells freedom; his stated goal is to arm America with as a many ARs as he can.

If you have the ability to put a piston in top-dead-center, you can put together an AR.

Best regards,

The #1 NATIONAL EMERGENCY is GLOBAL WARMING.

I saw this in the debates, last night.

Sorry, this gun thing will have to wait until after we fix that, first.

As far as I can tell the anti gun lobby is not a threat to your constitutional right to have bear arms micro surgically attached to your body in case of a wood chipping accident.

It's mainly the type of guns. For example the Las Vegas shooter's gun stash. Automatic military assault weapons.

Granted it's easier with a small population, but the US does absolutely nothing not even the easy stuff, like better background checks. I mean seriously, only a completely deranged lunatic could object to better checks and I'm sure that there are limits to your constitutional right to guns, like if someone had a mental illness.

Eegore, it appears that you are adopting an 'all or nothing' approach and what this does is turn any progress into an all out ban. It's obvious that the US has a serious gun problem that is completely out of proportion to the population, and yet what I cannot understand is the dogged resistance to soft options like better background checks.

Dude....I am typing slow.......
Hopefully, this might help.
I doubt it, but I'll try, that is just the kind of guy I am.

So......yes, better laws, indeed, like better background checks..... sure.

We can't, nor do many, care to enforce laws written now, with illegal immigration being a perfect example.

Hey...I know.

Lets do back ground checks on them, then what, send them back, deny them entry.....

Oh shoot..... that might not work, eh....Bullseye?   :-/

Keep trying, the brain is like a muscle......who knows, maybe with some more exercise, you'll be able to see reasoning is a good tool to understanding.....

You can take a breather now....  :-*

"Eegore, it appears that you are adopting an 'all or nothing' approach and what this does is turn any progress into an all out ban."

This would be incorrect, however you may have not been part of other discussions on here where we discussed firearm ownership in the US.  I do believe in background checks, I do not think everyone should have a semi-automatic firearm.  For instance I have brought up several times that the issue is murder rate per minute, not gun ownership in general.

The "ban knives" or "ban red cars" argument is ridiculous, until red cars and knives are used to kill 50 people in a nightclub in two minutes.

"but the US does absolutely nothing not even the easy stuff, like better background checks"

Incorrect.  Things like multiple magazine capacity laws are in place.  More extensive background checks are proposed in law regularly.  The mechanism used in the Nevada shooting (they were not "automatic military assault weapons" by definition) was banned:

"The final rule clarifies that the definition of “machinegun” in the Gun Control Act (GCA) and National Firearms Act (NFA) includes bump-stock-type devices, i.e., devices that allow a semiautomatic firearm to shoot more than one shot with a single pull of the trigger by harnessing the recoil energy of the semiautomatic firearm to which it is affixed so that the trigger resets and continues firing without additional physical manipulation of the trigger by the shooter."

So to say "absolutely nothing" meaning zero action is not correct.  Also to say that even implementing these laws work is incorrect.

Millions of guns are already in the hands of criminals in the US, and they don't go surrender their guns.  An order to surrender assault weapons so they can be destroyed by the Government will do nothing about that.

"gawd....do kids even do that anymore, or just go straight to intercourse? "

The latest National Teen Summit indicated that most children under the age of 9 will limit their sexual contact to non-penetration if they have a choice.

10 to 13 have the highest percentage of non-penetrating sexual contact with about 30% engaging in some form of penetration before turning 14.

14 to 17 are the least likely to engage in non-penetrating sexual contact and instead go straight to intercourse.  Most of which are non-consensual.

This of course represents a very limited pool of individuals.  The CDC information on teen pregnancy, sexual assaults, and STD treatment however has rather similar numbers.

@Eegore,

Sometimes 'pointless' is as good as nothing at all. I had never even heard of bump stocks until the Las Vegas shooting. I've seen people demonstrate how to basically operate a single shot very much like a bump stock. Looking at a general trend in the mass shootings, it would appear that a bump stock, is not really a serious factor.

And yet there was widespread resistance. In some ways it's worse that doing nothing because it allows the lawmakers to pretend that something serious has been done.

However isn't this just a reflection on the wider US policies. The Democrats send hundreds of bills to the Senate all killed, even bi partisan bills. Dead at the altar of McConnell. It's clear that the gun debate is really about mental health issues.

Not only that but in virtually every mass shooting in the US that I can remember, the shooter had been easily able to obtain a gun under dubious circumstances.

Religion, guns and money.
