Title: Re: upgrades Post by Armen on 12/15/19 at 08:20:38 When someone comes to me with a used bike, I give them my list: First make it run Then make it safe Then make it reliable Then make it better. So: F Full service. New tires and tubes. Real shocks. Fork springs and oil. Rejet the carb. Check out the cam chain tensioner. Fix/change/modify. then.... |

Title: Re: upgrades Post by Gary_in_NJ on 12/16/19 at 07:09:50 I wish we had a "like" button so I could like Armen's post. And I wasn't trying to be a smart as$ in my post, but if you don't know what needs to be upgraded, you should work on becoming a more proficient rider so the upgrade opportunity presents itself to you. For example, how are your braking skills? How is you control during a panic stop? Can you apply full brakes without locking up a wheel? Are you able to apply maximum brakes mid corner? Are you comfortable applying brakes on sand or gravel? If you are unsure of any of these (maybe because you haven't had reason to try) or worse, uncomfortable with any of these, than perhaps you need to explore your skills. |

AND: I agree with what Gary said. No reason to upgrade when you don't know what you need or WHY you need it. |

Saddle bags are 'fun' to fit. There are virtually no aftermarket brackets (you might find a random custom set on the net but be careful because they generally mount on the fender rail bolts and I think they changed configuration at some point) Most people seem to make up their own innovative ways to mount them. The limiting factors are the position of the rear turn signals and the height/width of the rear drive pulley - and of course the exhaust). Some people move the turn signals to the license plate bracket to make more room. |
Title: Re: upgrades Post by IslandRoad on 12/16/19 at 13:25:29 The word 'upgrade' is nteresting. Do you mean: I want to add/change things because it's fun to personalise the bike. I want to make it perform at it's best - or better. I want it to look better. I want it to be more comfortable to ride according to my style. I want it to be safer to ride according to my style. They're all valid perspectives but each answer will give you different mods to make. If I was gonna change one thing it would be re-jet and tune the carb (and replace the petcock) |
Title: Re: upgrades Post by jcstokes on 12/16/19 at 13:50:50 Since you have good tech/mech skills you may also wish to consider Daves Front pulley mod, this involves replacing the stock front pully with a Kawasaki 25 tooth pulley, will give reduced revs at cruising speed, without sacrificing too much pulling power. Dave has threads on this, and most who have done it seem satisfied, you would need to remove an insignificant piece of the pulley cover. |
