My breather hose cracked while trying to get the baked end back over the head cap nipple. Is there an acceptable part widely available, say, at a national chain? Meanwhile, I'll try to cut it shorter, refit...

That tubing isn't anything special.
I replaced it with silicone tubing.

I think mine is 3/8" rubber heater hose from the autoparts store

I wouldn't cut it to much shorter , it needs to be arched to allow the oil droplets to run back into the motor, it might even help to make it slightly longer if you can.
