Title: Triumph, official bike of the rainbow flag folk?
Post by philthymike on 10/26/19 at 14:38:41

First of all I'm not trying to bash anyone. I just really want to know is Triumph the gay man's motorcycle brand of choice?
So far every Triumph rider I've met in and around my regional area was fairly light in the loafers and obviously so at that.
Is this the same elsewhere?
Is it a stereotype like Texans with Cadillacs? Like Rednecks and pickups? Like people from New Jersey can't drive?

You made me pause for a second. I don't ride a triumph but I really do like them and I also like busty, good looking women! 8-)

I think your sample might be too small.  ;)

Triumph makes a lot of different bikes.

These for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q23YvC97oY

Triumph is the engine supplier for Moto2. Race version of the Street triple motor.

Supposed to be a somewhat detuned, street legal version available next year.

Well Mike if I said the Savage was a women's bike would you still own one or just put on a dress on before you ride. No one gives a crap what you ride and no one really cares what your sexual preference is. It's like this even if you ride a moped ,when you get off it and your smiling that's all that matters. It is possible they have claimed the Triumph as the bike they ride, just remember no one gives a crap !

Lots of people say that the Savage is a newbie training bike. I still ride it.
I already said I'm not bashing anyone or anything. I'm just trying to figure out if there's a trend in play.

I'm with SpringMan , I like the looks of the Triumphs.   I should have bought a 790cc SpeedMaster when they were new ... but they were chain drive so I didn't .   :P

But there ain't no "  light in the loafers  " going on here !   I like the way my boot fit !  ;)

Mike didn't mean to criticize you , just voicing an opinion. A Triumph is just as much a classic today as it was 50 years ago. Plain and simple they are great bikes.

In those old biker movies , I always liked the Triumphs more than the Harleys (when they both were chain drive  ;D )

Just because Triumph didn't used to be the Chosen brand, doesn't mean it isn't now. I doubt Subaru was always the brand lesbians chose.

Post by Dave on 10/27/19 at 02:48:56

Subaru has definitely become the choice of the earthy folks who don't buy a Prius (now that Honda has stopped making the Element).

In this area I haven't seen that any of the LGBT folks ride any 2 wheel vehicles.....although the brief encounters I have at the rest area along my common riding routes may not be sufficient to determine any sexual preferences or misapplied femininity/masculinity.

Several of my male friends have Triumph/Ducati/Moto Guzzi/BMW bikes, and they step pretty heavy in their riding boots (no loafers while riding).  I have only met a few female riders, and they have been on Japanese bikes......other than the female biker chicks that congregate at the Quaker Steak and Lube bike nights which are heavily laden with tattoos and leather and ride Milwaukee made steeds.

I don't spend any time in locations that are heavily populated with LGBT - so I really have no basis for an informed comment.....the area I live in is rural and still very "straight".

I had a Harley Sportster 48, 1200  Many Harley riders see the Sportster as a girls bike. These guys, in general, seemed to know little about motorcycles. It was all about the look. I never had to chain my wallet to my pants.   ;D

I live in the Philly area. My particular locale is quite working class and many of my neighbors work for the nearby refineries in Marcus Hook. That town being notorious for a few historical reasons:
1, Pirates
2, Pagans MC
3, The 1st openly gay bar on the East Coast

And with Philly having a LGBT community comparible in size to San Francisco you run across those people quite regularly. You work with them, ride the train with them and sometimes even make friends with them. I had a few transgender friends until they moved away and one of my oldest friends used to be gay in the 90s. He's now married to a beautiful woman and they've made a beautiful little boy.

I ride alot. I'm not a weekend warrior. I don't own a car so it's the bikes or the train for me. I also go to a few biker events and shop at Revzilla where lots of bikers tend to congregate. And in my normal travels I meet bikers at gas stations, parking garages, stop lights etc.
In my experience there's a healthy population of gay bikers around here and I even met a handful of lesbians out riding. I think it's fine that those folks enjoy motorcycling. They should. So should everyone IMO.
However, most of the gay men I run across are riding Triumph. So did Steve McQueen and I'm a fan of his.

So is it a thing? Do gay men have a preference for the brand?
You might think they would favor the Rocket but mostly I see them on the Various Bonneville models. Though I did meet a pair riding the big ADV model too.

I've only met two lesbians riding. One on a big Harley and the other on a Vstar 1100. The one on the Vstar told me she rode with a large group of similar women who all rode Vstars and took long distance rides all over the country.

Gay men tend to dress better than we do too...
I can see how the fit and finish of a Triumph would be more appealing than many other brands.

I hadn't considered that. That's an interesting observation.

I wonder if Triumphs marketing may have subtle cues towards the end of appealing to this marketing. That would be pretty progressive for a bike maker. Certainly a departure from the usual look how manly you'll be on our bike tactics.

Not that it matters, but I was at a bike show in Tacoma Wa a few years back, Indian had just brought the new Scout, women were pushing each other out of the way to get to sit on one. Lots of sales that day!
Me, I like the Street Twin or the V7 equally!

The other day I was out of town at a bar just chillin when a relatively good looking woman comes and sits next to me. I figured I would strike up a conversation and just said, "Hey there, how ya doin tonight." She turns and looks at me and just says, "I'm a lesbian." So I said, "Cool, I'm a Texan. Where is Lesbia?" Well, you failed.  There's nothing as alienating as being regarded as a 2 dimensional caricature.   Not a person, not an individual, but a “them”.  You knew that when you wrote “light in the loafers”- not like, but unlike.   That's no way to build an inclusive community.

Either celebrate the box you would put homosexuals in, or be sick- that's a denigration, not a choice.   Pride in self precludes conforming to the expectations of prejudice.

What's next?  -what sort of tire do Jews like?  Do Christians prefer synthetic or mineral oil?  Tell me- what sort of bike do bigots like to ride?

Haha...I live in a heavily populated area with a very thriving Gay and Lesbian community and influence.....but sorry Bot, your perception is as wrong as everyone elses, just like er, normal folk, some do not dress so good, hell, some are slobs like me  ;D ;D ;D ;D

True story:

I was sitting in a bar, at the counter, waiting for my flight at JFK International....
A guy next to me was all decked out as a cowboy, boots, hat, dusters, etc...
The real deal, not a midnight cowboy, but a real scruffy dude.
A girl hopped up on the bar stool next to him, ordered a drink, then looked at this guy....
Then she started to stare at him.....

The guy turned toward her and ask her, "Mam, is there something I can help you with?"

She said, "Oh...I'm sorry, I am just a city girl, lived my whole life in NYC, and I have never seen a real cowboy....are you a real cowboy?"

He said, "Well I have slept under the stars in my bed roll for many years, wrestling cattle, branding them, mending fences, cooking over a camp fire, drinking my coffee with grounds in the bottom of my cup, bathing in the creek, etc....yeah, I think you could say I am a real cowboy....."

"WOW"....she said.

"What are you?" he asked.

She replied: "I am a Lesbian...."

He asked: "A WHAT?"

Her: "A Lesbian."

Him: "What is that?"

She said: "I like to get nekked and make love to other women, I am attracted to....., hey, I gotta go, they just called my plane, nice meeting you cowboy!"

She jumped down and sped away....
And just as soon another woman jumped up on the bar stool....

She looked over at him and did a double take, asking him if he was a real cowboy......???

He looked at her, replying: "Well....I use to think I was, but I just found out I am a Lesbian........????"

Well....maybe not so true, but hey, its the political board now, so lying is as right as rain  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Have a GREAT DAY....laugh, or be miserable, its a choice, no one gets out alive  :-*

Bigotry Is not a joke, lying is not an acceptable recourse to people of integrity- and “laugh or be miserable” is the false choice of surrender.  The late Elijah Cummings was exemplary of taking action- not merely smiling -in the face of miserable bigotry.

Communities naturally reflect on aberrant behavior.   It's self serving to style reaction to being a prick as fascism.  No bigoted blowhard has ever liked feed back.

Sadly, the public square was once a safe place to spew hate.   There are still a few fossils wondering around that haven’t realized the word is moving on without them, protesting change by parading their ugliness in public, doing their worst to poison the next generation, a stain remaining to mark their passage.

Don't make waves- just sit at the back of the bus and be happy, eh?  Haven't folks suffered more than enough marginalization?

Springman, you talk as though bigotry poses no imposition.  As though the casual acceptance of vile expression for the satisfaction of one has no cost for another.   Is recognition of harm the greater transgression?   All that has been written here, the only comment you have is for my judgement- but for the mockery and prejudice, what say you?

There are plenty of different ways to get by that don't involve harming others.   Keep hate to yourself, if you must cling to it.  Prejudice will not receive my silent endorsement here.

I was finally reading through this thread from the beginning and see many of you have now been introduced to The Tall Table's drive-by shooter, Mavi.

An honest conversation was going on about a topic and Mavi, apparently feeling disrespected, drove by and started firing through the windows. Now, to be fair, all us regulars at The Table are d!cks to one degree or another. You have to be in order to endlessly argue topics with no clear answer and which we have absolutely no ability to influence. As a pr!ck, Mavi stands alone. Which is saying something since I'm guessing in that election, I might have won that award in days past. Much like Joe Biden, my time has passed and I have no chance to win now.

As to the topic of Triumph being the choice of gay riders, I've no idea. I wonder if its a simple case that a popular and successful Triumph sales rep around your area is gay and has encouraged a lot of his circle of friends who ride to get bikes from him? And those gay friends tell others and so on and so on. That happens often in other cases. There are industries clustered in certain areas of the country because one was very successful and employees left to start their own business. In a short period of time, that area turns into The Meca of that particular industry.

Or maybe like Sew said, gays dress nicer and Triumph's are like a man in jeans, any shirt with a sport jacket on; it looks good anywhere, anytime.

Now, to be fair, all us regulars at The Table are d!cks to one degree or another.

The circle here includes some reflective, considerate, thoughtful, humane people.

Yep- or any of the other myriad of reasons for behavior unrelated to sexual orientation. If you see three people of a particular sexual orientation eating Texas barbecue in Houston, attributing their choice to biology is nonsensical.  The original poster went farther than an ill considered observation, slathering on a euphemistic slur; mindfully of that, he amended a disclaimer.     Some recognized that.   Others circled wagons to defend prejudice.

My interest is in preserving a space in which all are welcome to share their interest in a motorcycle.       When prospective contributors show up and see posts like "what sort of oil do Blue people like?",  followed by a string of jokes about Blue people, the impression is alienating.   I don't come here to talk about bigotry and prejudice, but have been pressed to do so.   My silence would be an endorsement, and I will not be party to such.   My choice then is to leave or speak out.   Valuing this forum, I guarded its welcoming character.   I reject the notion prejudice deserves a "safe space" at the expense of any other, and urge you to do the same.

Is there a better way than mine to confront this damage to our community?   Probably- but none had stepped up when I chose to.   The quoted passage by Mark above seems one constructive approach.   Can you do better?   Have at it.

On a personal note......

Just finished up my last camping trip of the season.
The ranger shared with us that the squirrels get really active, knowing winter is coming, very bold, will come into your spot, even your trailer, if given the chance.....

He said, don't be fooled by what seems as harmless friendliness.....
NEVER FEED THEM, or your camping trip will be one big PITA.

They only want your nuts......

Get my drift, buddy?

@Mavigogun

My interest is in preserving a space in which all are welcome to share their interest in a motorcycle.

I have a GS500 and the gf has the Savage. Both bikes are similar ages and pedigrees, and they both have similar dedicated forum that differ in one way only, that is the Savage forum has this political section that allows posts that are frankly embarrassing to think that people might wander into them.

There are only a small handful of total assho1e tosser fcukwits like Ray, JoG and Mn who are allowed by Serobot to flout any normal behaviour on a thread.

I wondered out loud why, if they refuse to even stop personal abuse, this festering sore of a subforum, is necessary. All it is, is a platform that is automatically redundant and is used simply to parrot Trump and create a safe space for those who felt OK to crawl out from under their rocks and out  themselves as the pieces of sh!t that they are.

Almost all of your posts are on this "festering sore of a subforum". Why is that?

I don't remembers seeing any of the folks you mentioned calling anyone "as*hole tosser fukwits" or "pieces of sh!t" like you just did.

Do they have mirrors down under ?

Sorry you feel that way Mavi. I like joking and kidding around and if I offend you, too bad. I am not trying to offend you, you just took it that way. I have had plenty of fun poked at me and heck I laugh at it myself if it is good. If anybody has shown any tolerance here it is me, not you. Life is too short to be offended all the time. Go take a ride. Enjoy life.

The topic has been moved from the cafe'.... it has been pointed out why, and we have all had our two cents...

I don't want any members to be offended either,... the rules are looser here in the TT and to venture in is to accept that.

I don't decide who stays or who goes,.. I try to intercede as seldom as possible.
I'm gonna' lock this thread up now.

Peace,
Serow
