Title: Jet size question
Post by odakira on 10/24/19 at 20:36:07

Ive got a 1999 Savage that Ive switched to a 52.5 / 155 jet combo. Just wondering if these two jets are okay at their current sizes or do I need to change them out? Figured I might be able to get an answer before putting frankenstein back together.

Thanks!

The jets in the picture,  are air jets , they should be left alone.

Gotcha! Just wanted to be extra sure. Thank you!

Yeah, what Batman said.

The 155 main is a fat jet. What jet did you have in the main prior and what modifications did you make?

What Gary said ,and your location (elevation above sea level) also influences main jet size.

I bumped up the main from 145 to 155, the pilot jet from 52.5 to 55. Took out the white spacer and swapped it for some flat washers that are about half the size of the white spacer. Switched out the stock muffler for an Emgo slash cut muffler that is "baffled".

I'm in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Elevation is roughly 400-600 ft above sea level.

I'd start by checking your mileage , I think you'll find it's in the low to mid 40's , which would mean your jets are a bit to large. I have St. Louis as 465ft above sea level . I run between 400 and 1300 ft and run a stock 52.5 pilot , 150 main and 3 washer on the needle .with a high performance air filter and stock baffled Dyna muffler . 55/155 jets are usually only used at sea level. checking your sparkplug I think you'll find it's still pretty black. If that 's true ,I'd think about smaller jets for both better mileage and performance.

I do have a 150 main jet on hand. I'll go ahead and switch back to that and the 52.5 pilot and see how it does for me. I don't have much riding weather around here really so it's not a big deal if I gotta shelf the carb until the next riding season.

Thank you again for all your input!

I think the 52.5/150 would be about right.

Yep.......I agree.

I live in the Cincinnati area......elevations between 500 - 800 msl.  The #150 main always worked best, the #50 pilot works best on some bikes.....on other bikes a #52.5 is better.

A stock engine with a #155 or larger jet will run - but it will be overly rich and just run sloppy.  The engine runs so much crisper with proper jetting!

ALL TRUE ! but I think you should do the spacer mod as well . to prevent sag in the mid range where the bike spends most of it's time.

+1 on the 52.5/150 jets, 152.5 is the biggest I'd try. Cheers! 8-)

I've run a 160 main jet on several Savages (Central Ohio, ~1000ft above sea level) as per 6Sigmas suggestion. They also included a 165 in case the 160 wasn't big enough. Cone filter on a 90* silicone elbow, debaffled aftermarket or Harley exhaust, clipped diaphragm spring. Good mileage, clean burn, AMAZING throttle response. Your Results Clearly May Vary...

BrokeAss , What do you get for mileage?  Got a number? what is your pilot jet size ,what did you do for the spacer mod?

Too old and not broke enough to pay attention to mileage. My Buddy rides the last one I built and he's not complaining. When we do a day ride he stops once in 8hrs same as the rest of us. I wanna say the pilot is 52.5, but don't quote me, too many bikes go thru here to recall. It's whatever 6Sigma suggests and sends with their kit. Needle gets 2-3 washers I believe, and the slide spring gets trimmed. Bike starts so much quicker, doesn't smoke or stink or get hot.
