Title: Bike Stance
Post by Blanco Willy on 10/20/19 at 10:54:23

Anyone lower their front forks 2in while using the stock rear shocks and tire? Was planning on lowering my front forks soon and was thinking about going with slightly taller rear shocks. Was planning on using the vs800 shocks. Then thought crossed my mind that maybe the stock rear setup will be fine with forks lowered. Anyone riding with just the front lowered with comments and pics?

I have 800 shocks on the rear...
I'd rather add suspension than take any away.

How did the handling change ? I was hoping that lowering the front and raising the rear would make it better for the clip on setup. Great bike by the way [ch128077] Also I thought it would give a more square setup and a lower
fork angle.

Have you seen the Ryca conversions?...

Yes but I'm not changing rear tire size or adding that tall  set of rear shocks. I simply wanted to see an know about a bike with the front lowered only. The ryca is lowered in the front and raised considerably higher in the rear. I want to know how it looks with the stock rear wheel and shocks.

Cut 2" off the spacers and then you'll know.

Actually Verslagen1 I was going to add 2in spacers to the damper rods. Any reason you think cutting the spacers is a better option?

Lowering the front ,with the stock rear will open you up to some really bad front peg scraping!( worse than stock)    Serowbot  and I are on the same page when it comes to this , Ryca cafes  gets away with this only because of the mid controls,  you're much better off replacing the rear shocks with ones an inch or two longer , either way you go reduces wheel base and steering neck angle making the bike turn in a bit faster, but lowering the front forks on a stock bike isn't the way to go ,you'll lose ground clearance under the pegs ,just where you need it most.

Excellent point. Guess I should do some math and figure out how high to go in the rear. Maybe I should just by a Sportster instead. I don't know how us noobs get sucked in to this kind of thinking

Or maybe raising the rear shocks could provide the desired effect. Then maybe lower the front only an inch instead of two.

Your in for a shock ! sportsters drag pegs worse than we do !  and you better be short legged or your knees will be in your arm pits ,I know  I just rode one to my house for winter storage a few minutes ago and couldn't wait to get off it .
PS the 18  tire a the Ryca is hardly taller than your 15 Savage tire (rim size is larger ,but the narrow 18 tire has a much shorter sidewall height )                               '

The 800 shocks are a great improvement... and they are reasonably cheap on E-bay.
You might try them and see,... if you still feel the need, then tackle lowering the front.
Sometimes it's better to make changes in stages just so you know what's doing what.

Anyway,... enjoy your tinkering.

Thanks serobot. I will definitely do that. Any idea if buying a used set of rear shocks is worth doing ?  I know the price difference is considerable compared to buying oem shocks. I don't really even want to mess with aftermarket shocks. But I'm also weary of a set of 15yr old shocks.

Mine were used... I've had them on for around ten years.
This pair was much softer than stock.  I'm only 145lbs.
I got them from a buddy that was 300lbs,.. so they might have been particularly well broke-in.
... but perfect for me.

I probably have 100 lbs over Sew and with the same intruder shocks set on the softest setting.  I don't think I've ever bottomed out.

Mine:  12 1/2 rears, front lowered 30mm using DC Motive top tree, totally painless mod resulting in almost zero understeer, and a smile in every corner !

I run 11.5"progressive  shocks , but only need one hockey puck under the kickstand , which I ground to the shape of the stand at the top ,and about twice the size at the bottom . It supports the bike on any surface.

Ohio , only because you have mid mounted pegs  With stock pegs and stock shocks  you'd be in trouble.  Our 35 degree fork rake  and forward pegs both make things worse

Not true batman.  I ran it a whole summer in stock trim with the 18" rear wheel and lowered forks.  No issues at all.

Title: Re: Bike Stance
Post by batman on 10/22/19 at 08:05:55

The 18"wheel  lifts the rear 3/4 of a inch alone , maybe  more depending on tire size and brand and tread depth , equivalent to running an 11" shock rather than the stock 10 " , which gave you added height under the pegs . that's how you got away with it , Blanco Willy did not intend to go the 18 " wheel route or taller shocks .He would have been dragging pegs.

Title: Re: Bike Stance
Post by ohiomoto on 10/22/19 at 08:31:07

Sorry batman, the 18" tire is just under 3/4" ( .7" ) larger in diameter than the stock tire.  But this only raises the rear axle by half of that.   So the rear axle is less than 3/8" higher than with the stock tire.  But wait, there is more...

The stock footpegs are closer to the front axle which is the fulcrum of the ark of the rear axle.    The pegs are about twice as far from the rear axle than the front, so they get raised about a 3rd of what the rear axle got raised.  That means my 18" tire raised the pegs by less than 1/8".

So you are saying the only reason I could ride that bike to and from work every day for months was that the 18" tire that raised my footpegs ~1/8"?????

I must be one lucky bastard!! ;)

Title: Re: Bike Stance

I looked at your  bike with the forward stock pegs  ,and I saw that they looked pristine!  You must have  "chicken strips" a mile wide on your tires, kind of what I'd expected ,you actually have to lean the bike to grind a peg  ( you may be the  only owner  that hasn't - maybe you could start a poll?) mine are ground up into the chrome end cap about a 1/4"   from running a stock suspension , but never since going to 11.5 'progressive shocks. So maybe you're not so lucky, as not very aggressive . Remember it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. (your 18 "tire if a 110 is 1.98 "larger in dia. a 120 2,69 '' larger ,lifting your bike between 1&1.5 "" taller on avg. )= to a 11 or 11.5 "shock)

If you wear the left shoe on your third leg, does that mean that on a long walk you have a right drift since you have two lefts pushing and one right? Do you correct for this by putting a little left camber in your two left shoe soles?
