Title: Parade flags..
Post by ShellyB on 09/03/19 at 09:12:57

I'm wondering if anyone here has some suggestions or experience with carrying big flags  on your savage? Like in a parade or escort type situation.
I'm looking for ideas on a mount for the pole. How did you do it?
Also this probably isnt a 1 time thing. So a bracket of some sort maybe?
Thoughts? Pictures?
Thanks.

Youzguys mounts one, but he has a sissy bar to mount to, makes it easy.

I have a couple if you're interested in going that route.

Otherwise, you're probably going to need a custom bracket.

I might be interested actually. How tall are the sissy bars? (Forgive my rookie questions please) I dont know if they come in sizes....
I'm kinda new at all this.

They are not very tall, only 1 size, maybe 12"
I'll have to measure.

I like those! And you have one for sale Verslagen1? Of course my next question is how much, if you do and would you like to talk by PM? (Unsure of etiquette about this)
I dont know if I can message you with only 3 posts..
Thanks Stewmills for the pic. That helps.

You'll need 10 posts to pm and you don't have your email button active but mine is.

$40 plus shipping.  Not perfect, the pad is torn, may have a bit of rust.

No, I don't know where either.

I started with a piece of PVC with a U-Bolt to hold it to the sissy bar using the holes that the sissy pad mounts with.  An aluminum pole with an oak dowel core was put in the PVC. I drilled a small hole in the top of the sissy bar to center the pole.
That setup lasted a year or so.  The aluminum eventually cracked.
Now I have a custom built pole that is heavy steel, and the sissy bar has been modified with an extra bar across the legs.

How it looks "in use".
This rig has been tested up to 70mph.
Annin makes the best high wind flag.
Pioneer makes the toughest nylon flag (for wet conditions),
(Only my opion.. of course  ;) )

Thank you everyone very much for your advise!
I will show all this to Hubby and we will come up with a plan.
I really appreciate your time talking to me about this. I will keep you updated on how we go about it.
That's a great pic youzguyz!

youzguyz...
I keep looking at that pic you posted. I want to do that kind of thing so badly. I just joined American Legion Aux and await word from them about joining the Riders. Because I hope to do local parades etc.
I have to ask.... is that flag heavy? How badly does it effect your bike? Both at slow, parade speed and at highway speed? Or do you typically use a smaller flag say if it's an escort on the highway? I'm very small so I hope it's not too bad.
Sorry.. I have so many questions about this and your the 1st person who does it I have been able to talk to so far.

I grew up next to one of our national cemeteries and have great respect for those who gave all they had for our country.  I find that pic to be very moving as well as emotional. A very special picture indeed !

Oh yeah and it's a Savage.

ShellyB.
I ride with the Patriot Guard Riders... and so can you and your husband.   It is a national organization, and there is nothing special required to join.  You don't have to ride.  You don't have to be a veteran.  All you need is.. respect.   Take a look at the national site, and look for one that is local to you as well.
The national site: https://www.patriotguard.org/
Lots of ALR members ride with the PGR.

That flag is my Annin Tough Tex.  It is fairly heavy, and has to be to hold up to highway speeds that shreds other flags.  And I won't run that flag in the rain.  First, it gains a lot of water weight FAST.  Second, once it gets dirty, it is almost impossible to get clean enough.
When rain looks likely, my nylon flag goes on.  Not as heavy, not as durable, but washes easily and sheds water.
Yes, you can feel the effect on the bike, especially in a hard cross wind at highway speeds.  "Most" escorts don't go over 50 on the freeway, as the police have to keep the procession together.
It gets really.. interesting.. when going over some of the really high over passes with a stiff wind blowing.
If you decide to do this kind of thing, make sure you practice under any conditions that you may want to ride in.  When riding escort you really need to stay on your side of the lane.
Slow speeds are not an issue with the flag, unless you have a hard enough tail wind that it blows around, in your face, and you can't see.

I have a smaller flag for every day riding.  One of those that is sold to fit in a car window.  Picture below.

More questions?  Ask away.  Try to answer best I can.
More pictures?  Neal Achterhof on Facebook.  All my posts are public, so you don't need to be a "friend" to view.

I make as many PGR missions as I can.  It's important.. at least to me.  Not everybody's "cup of tea".

Youzguyz,
I have all the respect and gratitude in the world for our veterans and military.  My husband was there for D. Storm and Sheild. My son is currently deployed to Poland/Germany for awhile..
I've been looking for something to do with my bike since about 2 weeks post licensing this spring.  (Yes, I'm a newbie, but coming along nicely) I didnt know what exactly except it had to do with the military.
I knew about the PGR, Who doesnt!  * bows respectfully * but I didnt know about ALR until we attended the parade for the 100th Ann of Legion this past Monday locally. They came through assisted by some of the other local club members because honestly there didnt seem to be many (ALRs) when the announcer told who they were and what they did. I just knew right then that this is what I want to do. I'm going to be an ALR!
My husband has graciously agreed to do this with me until I'm declared " trained" for lack of a better word. Thus relieving the team of the pressure of having a newbie. I come with a partner and coach to begin with.  :)  My little savage and I have a lot of work to do but I think parades are a good place to start. We both clean up pretty good.
Thank you for offering to answer questions. I'm still in awe you are a PGR.  So let me regain my composure here. I will definitely check out your page! Thank you so much for your time. I believe we will be talking more here. Lol

Ok, So 1st let me say we might be drifting a bit off topic. Not for me because this all comes back around to what Im doing, but if this should be in another thread somewhere Mods please let me know. Im content to stay here rather than move around your forum and get into trouble somehow. But I have no issue if you want to use your mad mod skills to put me where I wont bother anyone.

youzguyz..
I looked at your pics and visited the PGR link. What your group does is wonderful. Well done! I was esp moved by the "unattended"  missions. Is that right? When the vets have no one. I wonder how much that happens here. This is a very rural community. small town stuff. Very small towns.
Are there still a lot of funeral protests going on now? or has that settled down some? Just curious. I dont watch a lot of news...
I have a few questions, maybe not pertaining to flags at the moment but if your willing to answer I would be grateful. I really want to make a good impression when I meet with whoever my local ALR is. Best way to do that is know some stuff and not ask a lot of stupid questions. So can I ask you? I dont want to be a pest.
Heres a couple..
Is it unusual for women to escort or do missions? I guess Im asking whats proper. I didnt see any in the pics on your page.
and I have a few questions about vests and patches but Im not sure if its the same "rules" between the 2 groups. Not so much placement more about.. lets say earning them, wearing them? I guess. For example if I do get into the ALR do I get to wear a patch or are there things I have to do 1st? I dont know and Yeah thats probably a stupid question.  Its all about etiquette that I ask these things. I mean theres a lot to this. Im just trying to get a handle on some of the basics for now.
Are you also an ALR and are there any here? (Its good to know who to suck up to right from the beginning. Just kidding. Kinda.  ;) ) I joke sometimes but thats just me Im very serious about all this.

Also, if theres anyone else reading this... Please feel free to join in if you have something to add. Im listening.

ShellyB.  I started a new topic in The Cafe called "PGR, ALR and other motorcycle escort things" and put your post in there.  My responses will be there as well.
Stuff about the flag mount probably can still go here.  But, I am not a moderator  ;)
