Title: LS400  starter relay
Post by bart on 09/02/19 at 06:18:52

Can someone maybe tell me where the starter relay is on an `88 LS400 ?  and does anyone know if starter motor is the same as a 650`s ? I might be looking at wrong problem, solenoid is giving one click when i press starter button, is it  the solenoid or the starter dodgy  ?  battery is good

the solenoid is bolted to the front of the rear fender between it,  and the back of the air box.   Starter I would say is the same , I don't know why Suzuki would make them different ,both share the same bottom end ( except  for a different crank ,rod, and piston.

How do you know the battery is good?

Batteries can fail in an instant.....I have had one work fine for years and start my bike twice one morning while I ran errands - then fail in an instant when I stopped for gas a few minutes later.....there was no warning.

Have you checked the voltage at rest - and also when you push the starter button?

Thanks for both replys, battery is showing 12.74 volts and seems strong, haven`t tried the test with starter button, do that next, had a look again and solenoid is under the tank ,  can`t see a relay ?     no change when starter pressed...  bridging solenoid doesnt turn motor, does that mean starter motor knackered ?

The solenoid under the tank is the compression release solenoid. The starter solenoid/relay is where you were told it was earlier. It's under the seat, behind the airbox, mounted to the front of the rear fender forward of the rectifier. Do a load test on your battery, reading 12v isn't an instant pass.

I thought the 400 savage didn`t have a compression release mechanism ?

Locate and Clean the ground on the engine.
It's on the right side, on the savage.

If jumping the solenoid doesn't at least make the starter motor clack check connections. Heck, check fuses.

It may not, never seen one, but I doubt the starter solenoid is under the gas tank...

Starter solenoid is under the tank, it maybe shouldn`t be there but it is !   still puzzling over it, i will try to check starter motor, it`s the only thing i haven`t checked yet.. only one fuse and that`s fine, earth is good too

Right, I have tried/tested :

Ground..right hand side engine, cleaned and additional ground wire fitted

battery, strong and  load test ok

solenoid appears to be ok,  fuse ok

occasionally when i hit the starter with a hammer and press start button , the starter will whirr very slowly.

Is there anything else I can check before i take starter motor off ?  and thanks for all your suggestions and guidance..

I took the starter motor off to bench test it,   nothing..    to make sure i had done the test properly i took starter motor off my gn, that worked fine,  so... i tried to get into LS starter but both through screws snapped of, so i have bought a new starter motor, should be delivered tomorrow, hopefully that will sort it,  thanks again to everyone that has helped me, i will report back when new one fitted. :)
