Title: Oh Man, Not Another One
Post by Ed L. on 08/28/19 at 11:51:58

Getting ready for another hurricane, looks like Dorian is headed my way. I'm located somewhere in the cone of probability with touchdown being Sunday. Oh well, got the generator started up yesterday and already have plywood cut and ready to go for the windows. Still need to police the yard for potential flying objects and get some beer.
Hoping it will blow on by without hitting too hard.

I'm hoping you dodge it, but either way, it's obvious from your stated priorities in how you explained the order of how you plan on prioritizing the unfinished business that you have No IDEA about how to actually Do it.
Ya get the BEER, and THEN you police the area, While you walk around looking down and sipping on your daggum beer, dude.

And remember, even empty beer cans at 100 mph hurt.

Be safe out there.    [smiley=engel017.gif]

He might even end up with some boats in his yard (near the pile of empty beer cans).

Praying for you and the others in the path.......my sister in law and her family are near Sarasota.

More BEER , they say you should have at least a 3 day supply ( beer , food , meds , more beer and if you have enough beer then water becomes optional ) for emergencies. And the storm isn't even here yet. Wow this is stressful , someone get me a beer.

[ch9989] get a lot more beer

Be Safe

I'm nervous about this one, they are calling for a Cat 3 if it doesn't slow down. Put a new roof on the house last year and have the insurance paid up. Made it through two hurricanes in 2017 but they were only Cat 1.
The weak spot is my shop and I'm going to cover all the power equipment with tarps just in case the roof leaks. Also will be moving most of my reloading gear into the main house, need to keep my powder dry. Don't think the wife would let me store the Savage in the living room for the duration :(.
Going to be interesting no matter where it hits. Expecting to loose power and internet by Sunday evening. Will try to update off my phone if that happens.

Here in NC I'm still rebuilding from hurricane Irene. It's depressing and I'm not into it because of the feeling that it's just going to happen again. Moto Guzzi Convert, Kaw 650, Yam SRX600 all knocked over in the garage and filled with salt water and sand. They are now paperweights. I try to prepare for it, and get beer also, but never drink a drop because of the effort to stay alive, and the paralyzing fear during one of these events. When I know a hurricane is coming, I feel like throwing up. Good luck and best wishes to anyone in it's path.

I've been through BIG earthquakes, fires, and the thing that freaks me out most is the wind....

I don't like wind.

When we first moved to the island, up here in the Pacific Northwest, which was at the end of September, that very first winter we had a storm that packed 90 MPH winds, and of course it hit at night.
Now remember I live in the woods, not a city, and its DARK at night.
You could hear, but not see, the trees and branches falling....
And that wind sounds like a freight train roaring towards you as you are standing on the tracks!!!   :o :o

We left the bedroom, to go down and sleep in the basement, as we figured the trees wouldn't kill us there if the fell on the house.
It was NOT a good nights sleep, and we were without power 5 days.

But I still love it here  :)

Best wishes to you Ed. We actually had a heck of a storm here in Houston yesterday evening. Luckily it only lasted less than 2 hours, but man for a while I was wondering what was going on as I knew Dorian is heading your way, but did not expect it to make a detour through Houston. Be safe. You will be in my prayers.

Hotrod, you are on the coast ?
I was thinking you were inland and lived close to Toymaker.
I haven’t seen him around here for quite some time.

Thanks everyone, got the plywood sorted out and will put the panels up Friday. Pretty much have everything ready except for filling up a bunch of buckets with tap water for washing. Need to drop the level of the pool next.
Worked my bee hives today strapping them down onto their cinder block bases, they weren't happy and popped me twice. Shouldn't of been wearing shorts. LOL
I'm a bit pragmatic about it, what happens will happen, I'm just doing my best to protect what's mine.
I remember back when I was young and dumb going out and body surfing right after a hurricane. Taught me to respect the forces of nature, had a great time but got humbled by the surf.

I live in Belhaven NC, where the Pamlico Sound meet the Pungo and Pamlico rivers. Bad flooding with any hurricane. 5 feet in the garage. I can't swim, ( grew up in Bronx NY ) so I wear a life jacket during hurricanes.  ::)

This thing is growing fast....

The effects extend way out there already, strengthening it even more....

Ya all hang on!

This is a good  site to watch:

"That's why you wore shorts" Ha Ha, good one JOG.
I'm all buttoned up, plywood in place and generator sitting on the back porch with 15 gallons of gas ready to go. Dug the camping stove and a  propane tank out for cooking when we loose power. Have some lanterns ready and the flashlights all charged up. Four hours of hot work done, now the wait begins.
Wednesday is when they say it will hit or go south or north or over to the gulf, somebody is going to have a bad week here in Florida.
Even found my rain slicker so guess I'm as ready as I can be. The weather channel is calling for a possible Cat 4 at landfall, Yikes !!.

Look like it might just veer north and go to Georgia......

Finalized all my prep today, re-filling plastic spring water bottles with tap water, kind of a no brainer for water storage. Also have about 30 gallons of mixed buckets and jugs for water storage.
Cross braced the roll up shop door with a couple of 2x4's for extra support and wrapped the bike in a tarp. Not sure what else I can do except wait.
Hoping that if the storm rolls up the coast it will hit Canaveral which sticks out into the ocean and will get pushed out off shore some before it gets to Daytona Beach. Even a 10 mile shift off shore will help.
Guess I'll cancel my trip up to St Augustine next week, sounds like that town is going to get seriously flooded.
They are now calling for it to hit my area mid Tuesday.  :(

I think it will get closer to NC than Florida.  There is action building in the ocean behind this one also. The ECMWF models are usually the best, but are hard to find. We still have all of Sept. and Oct. to go. Don't like it.  :-[

Storm is now moving at 1 mph over the Bahamas with 185mph sustained winds with gusts up to 220mph.
Storm surge and heavy rain.
How do you survive a storm that strong when it could last for 24 hours where you are.
I would get out of the way...WAY out of the way.

Will your house survive 200mph winds ?

Ed,  I am in Palm Beach county waiting to see if it wants to come to my place, or go up to see you.
Cloudy, some rain bands passing over, and not much at all for wind. I am 3 miles from the ocean and not too worryed about storm surge. They say 35-50 mph winds overnight tonight, not good, but, could be a lot worse.

Badwolf thanks for the link, getting tired of hearing about the storm hitting Georgia or Jacksonville, just worried about our little stretch of coastline and when it will get here.
Be safe you will get hit before me. :(

Looks like the worst has blown by. Lucked out with the eye staying about 50 miles off the Daytona Beach shore line. We got tropical force winds and rain but no major tree damage. Still need to check the shop but it's roof is still there.
Could of been worse, haven't run out of beer. ;)

Anyway, we are hunkered down here as best we can, not expecting the worst until Thursday night into Friday.

Welp, we made out very well, actually. Wind blew quite a bit, 60 mph at least, and we got 6-8 inches of rain, gauge overflowed and someone poured it out. But we only had a few limbs and such down here. There was very little, like none really, storm surge around here. We lost power for about 12 hours, a long time for the line we are on. our electric co op has 23000 members, 17000 were without power to begin with. I think now there are maybe 6000 without. Remember that is just our co op. Phone and internet was out until today. Cell service has been weaker than normal. But the Lord blessed us. Ocracoke got spanked, I hear. That is in Hyde County, like me. They are going to be cleaning up and fixing for a long time.

How bout me.....  ;D ;D ;D

It was CRAZY last night, never seen anything like it in my 66 years.
The house was shaking from all the thunder, lost power briefly.
I wouldn't even venture outside until it was further away.

I got some pretty good video, after I felt safe, but another close one drove me back in  ;D

Ray, didn't realize it ran all the way up the coast and slammed you. Glad to hear you made it OK. The northern hurricanes are pretty rare which makes them even more of a surprise when they hit. Sort of like getting a Northeaster on steroids wasn't it.
