Trump spoke with the NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre before appearing to rethink gun background checks, reports say

WASHINGTON – For a brief moment in the aftermath of the deadly mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, President Donald Trump seemed to indicate he would back stricter background check measures in an effort to stem gun violence.

Almost two weeks ago, before departing the White House, Trump had said "we need intelligent background checks" and that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was "totally on board."

Now, that option appears to have been shelved.

On Tuesday, according to media reports, Trump spoke on the phone with Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association (NRA), to assure him that the White House was not going to advocate for enhanced background checks.

The Atlantic first reported the details of the phone call, and it was later confirmed by the Washington Post and the New York Times.

According to the outlets, Trump told LaPierre that universal background checks for firearm purchases were no longer under consideration and that the White House would advocate for other measures around mental health or prosecuting federal gun crimes.

The NRA later confirmed that a call took place, posting a message on Twitter later Tuesday from LaPierre confirming that he spoke to the president Tuesday.

"We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a strong #2A President and supports our Right to Keep and Bear Arms," wrote LaPierre through the official NRA account.

Well, gee, what power does the NRA have?.... right?

This is proof positive that trump is not a leader - he's a follower. The NRA is leading him around by the nose and he's not even smart enough to make it look like it's his idea.

Pathetic. But then again, it's trump.....
