Title: I think I've been BITTEN !
Post by MMRanch on 08/10/19 at 22:49:41

I might need to sell a guzzi V-7 II in the near future ?

Yep , the dealing with that 17" tire and the low millage of anything that comes in 130/90-17 is changing my View on the V-7 Guzzi as a long range keeper !

............................

But , I might have found a solution .

this one is really similar but the engine is an 850cc instead of 750cc .
but this one has the 16" rear tire size and 19" front .

I'll know by Tuesday morning  ;)

Does it have the big gas tank?

That V9 is awful shiny!  I can see how it could get your attention.

If the new bike doesn't come to be - how hard/expensive would it be to change the rear rim on your bike to a 16"?  (seems like you aren't wearing out front tires too quickly).

I looked up that version of the V9, and it uses a 100/90-19 front tire and a 150/80-16 rear tire, and you can get that in the Michelin Commander tire - but at a price of $115 for the front and $151 for the rear tire......they don't come cheaply!  The Metzler Marathon ME888 is similarly priced.

There are also Kenda tires that look good and are cheaper.
https://www.bikebandit.com/tires-tubes/motorcycle-tires/kenda-k676-retroactive-motorcycle-tire/p/42004

There are a lot more tire choices with that size of wheel combination.

It is a bit hard to "pigeon hole" your motorcycle needs, and find the "perfect" bike for you.  You corner like you want a sport bike, ride long distances like a touring bike, want to take Marcia occasionally and need a bike that can ride double......and you like to hang out with guys on Cruisers.

It is a nice looking bike. Will it do everything Dave described?

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !

Lets see if I can do this :

Only 4 gallons , but I've have read the V-9 gearing lends its self to better MPG than the "Zipper" V-7 does , well the V-7 got about 55mpg on todays ride .   So the V-9's fuel light comes on about 180 miles , and the V-7's light comes on about 200 miles.   European fuel prices must be higher than our's ,  :-?

..............................................

Only 1,200 miles

I think 150 tire width is a bit much but it would be nice for the rim to be wide so the tire fits flat on the road  .    So , I'll check rim width after wearing out the original tire .  A narrow tire on a wide rim seems like a good idea to me .

My first experience with 17" rims has been  educational  enough there might not be a second !  ;)
I didn't think about it before jumping in , but "I've seen the Light"

I suspect that "Cruiser " bunch will never keep up with anybody that has been to the "OldFeller School of Dragon Slaying"  !
............................................

Springman , the easy assure is :   I'll see if I can find out ?  :o ;)

Well I sure hope things work out for you......it is a nice looking bike and has GIVI luggage!

I suppose the Corbin seat from your V7 will fit the V9?

And.....the Sport Demon tires on it will likely get you through the rest of this year (unless you go riding with Stewmills and me for a few days).

And I know you will enjoy washing and polishing it to keep it looking like new! ;)

Well the easiest thing to do is trade it in.
but will the new wheels fit on the old bike?

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !

will the new wheels fit on the old bike?

Na , Versey

the drive shaft is different , and the final drive gear rato is different / BIGGER and beef-ier .   the spoke shape if different too.

I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow in Kentucky .   I hope all goes well , its about 1/2 price and still has two years of factory guarantee left on it .

They have started making an adventure bike out of the 850 motor now too .   the last picture shows the driveshafts mass.
https://www.motoguzzi.com/sg_EN/motorbikes/enduro/V85TT/V85TT/

So now there are three of them :  The V-9 Roamer , The V-9 Bobber , and the V85TT , all the same family but the V85TT is outselling all the others put together ?   Its too tall for me !  ::)

The only part of this scenario that has me worried - is trying to sell your used V7.  The Moto-Guzzi market is pretty limited, and I wonder how easy it will be to sell a used V7 in the rural TN market.  Selling your Harley was likely pretty easy in comparison - it may not be so easy for a Guzzi.

The Harley sold in two days !   But the Guzzi is a better Bike.   Every one don't know that thpugh .

I can keep all three for a while till the battery on one goes dead from lack of ridding time

Hay , I found this in my truck today .  !   :)

And the bags for it was in the back seat !

Nice......don't get it dirty!

You going to park it in the little garage (I would). :)

Well Dave , your right about it being "Petty"  in the full sunshine it reflects nice !  8-)

.................................

Hopefully I'll get it Tagged today  .

but no gravel or dirt roads !
and at least under the    car    Bike port parking !  ;)

..................................

I'm a little unclear how the V85TT version is ratted at 80 something HP ,
and
The V-9 versions are only rated a 50 something Hp ?    both are 84 x 77 B+S --- but it don't really matter , anything over 30 HP goes to waste anyway !  ;D

Its only got 1200 miles on it , and looks brand new .  :)

It appears Moto-Guzzi has put an engine in the V85TT that is quite a bit different than the engine in the V9.  Here is what their website says:

A new engine, a future classic
The V85 TT introduces a new Moto Guzzi engine. Its configuration mirrors that of all Moto Guzzi bikes in production today: an air-cooled transverse 90° V twin with OHV distribution and two valves per cylinder, the pride and tradition of the Mandello Eagle. Engine capacity is 853 cc, thanks to a bore to stroke ratio of 84 x 77 mm. The most modern of all engines in the range, it can boast a ratio of almost 100 HP/litre. Thanks to its complete new design and the use of materials generally destined for race bikes, such as titanium, the new "eight and a half" is able to deliver maximum power of 80 HP and boast an impressive maximum torque value of 80 Nm at 5,000 rpm, with 90% of the torque already available at 3,750 rpm, in keeping with the tradition of the Mandello twin, which has always offered excellent drive even at very low revs. This is the first Moto Guzzi small block engine that can easily reach 8000 rpm, an aspect that showcases its modern and exuberant nature.

The way we ride big HP numbers aren't really needed.....too much HP and you are just going to get into trouble anyhow!

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !
Post by MMRanch on 08/13/19 at 12:35:15

Same bore and stroke , but not quite the same ?

Makes me think on my tractor (J.D.)  So :

They make the same tractor with 4 different HP ratting .

45 , 55 , 65 , 75 HP.

Everything is the same on all four tractors except one thing ...

THE INJECTORS   and the $$,$$$.$$

The dealer himself told/showed me on the models he had in stock , and sure enough you can't tell the difference in just looking at them.   Now the 75 HP one did have fatter rear tires , but other than that ... the same everything.

Like you said : " more HP = more Trouble most of the time."

MM,
I have always had a soft spot for Guzzis. As I mentioned they are a bit wide in the seat area for me to get a really good "grip" on the ground.

They have a lot of karisma, did I spell that correctly? ;D

So...how many cows had to die for the purchase of that Guzzi?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

try to pick one that won't stomp you to death.   :o

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !

And were they MM's cows.....or did some of the neighbors cows wander over and become Guzzi cows?

Congratulations MM. Very nice.

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !
Post by MMRanch on 08/13/19 at 18:16:04

Na , guys

Those were last years cows that bought this year's Guzzi !   ;)

You know , it pays to plan ahead .  :)

...........................

Norm ,

This one is low to the ground and the front of the seat is narrow , kinda like the old Yamaha DT's were .  The bars are nice and wide too , like a dirt bike with lots of leverage to bend the bike around corners and such.  8-)

......................................

And Stew , those cows don't have to die , ...  :-/  But they seem to know they are born to be "FOOD"  for meat eaters.    But there's no way I can keep all them here and them Moma cow keep having calfs ever year so they have to go somewhere .

Fact is , if they quit having calfs , then I have to sell them !  :o   Heck it cost $300.oo  a year to keep them moma cows up !
......................

Springman ,  I think it will ride with the Savages in mountains just fine , its only 440 lbs.  but feels more like 350 lbs.   ;)

I am glad you got the V9 Roamer and not the V9 Bobber.  I just can't believe that monstrous front tire on the Bobber makes for a good handling bike.

Title: Re: I think I've been BITTEN !
Post by MMRanch on 08/14/19 at 06:57:58

Ya , I imagine the gyro-scope effect of that much rubber would not be conductive to good handling  once you got up to 70 mph or so .
It might be good around town and/or gravel roads where a big footprint might make a difference ?
I noticed the Honda Rebel is like that fat tire up front , and I can picture it being a great/fun little machine (the 300 single) .    By time the 300 Rebel was running 70 or so you'd be close to top-end anyway .

I don't care for that "Blacked-Out" look anyway.

MM,

I understand top ends being limited by shaft drives and gearing (been there and done that on the Barcalounger).

How fast can your new bike go in top gear, and does it drag anything in the hard corners in the twisties ????

Sorry about being so long in assure-ing , I thought I might get a picture of the ground clearance .
I've got Hay Season going on again and my days are full of tractor ridding for a while .   It seems I can't get anything else done.
I'm rolling today and tomorrow as soon as the dew is gone.

The V-9 doesn't have a RPM meter , but the V-7 does.  I can tell the V-9 is geared a lot higher just by going through the gears.
Also the V-9 get better MPG by a lot ((V-9=63 / V-7=55) ish)
The V-7 would red-line 6th gear about 115 mph but it would be downhill .  ;D
Where the V-7 gears 3,4,5,6, seem to be close together / the V-9 has more difference in rpm when ya shifts .
I'm guessing here but the V-9 Red-line would be 130 ish mph. and the down hill wouldn't need to be as steep !  :)
The V-9 shaft drive is a lot "BEEFIER" too.

The ground  clearance/corning  is easily as good as the Savage or better.   Price wise the Savage still easily wins !  ::)
The weights Savage 380 lbs / V-9 440 lbs
But
They seem to be made for the same thing , Making the Rider Grin in the Twisties  !

Sounds like you found yourself a superior product compared to a Suzuki Barcalounger.   My Barcalounger hit an RPM limiter at 113 mph and that was all she wrote, folks.   Lots of motor left, but you can't get to it to use it because you are jest flat caught in the shaft drive Suzuki rpm / rev limiter trap.

That large thick dragging main cross bar on the Barcalounger made it jest flat dangerous up in the hard twisties as it was the FRAME hitting the pavement HARD, first thing.   Not the pegs, not the muffler bracket, THE FRAME and it is hitting the pavement SMASH/BANG hard and bouncing the rear tire up into the air.

Glad you found yourself a good one !!!!    Ride long and be happy !!!!

Thanks buddy !  :)

I sometimes think "I've got a disease" called , "Want to ride all of them" .  ;D

I'll have to admit , I've never wanted to ride a Gold-Wing or a Road-Glide --- or anything that looks like them , also those big 4 cylinder "crotch-Rockets" never made me druell either . I've had a couple 4 cylinder bikes and don't need to do that again !  ;)
