I worked in a medical center for 13 years. A lot of self-inflicted injuries are survivable.

Most suicide attempts are lower caliber pistol shots to the head or chest, some to the midsection, I've seen 4 or 5 to the leg.

I don't have the exact statistics from the center I worked at but can get them. I would estimate that firearm related suicide attempts are about 40% survivable as many "attempts" are abandoned at the last second. Many people flinch, even more aren't committed, similar to wrist slashing. Almost all of those are survivable.

Three trained police officers engaged the shooter nearly immediately, and ~~yet~~ 3 people were ~~still~~ killed. Of the 3, 1 was struck by gunfire allowing the others to quickly take him out.

Imagine how many more could have been ~~killed accidentally by some idiot~~ saved by good guys with a gun ~~and~~ even with bad judgement and/or aim.

Yeah - to continue my analogy - "more guns is the answer". While gun free zones doesn't hold water.
