Title: adventures in Harleyhood
Post by batman on 07/03/19 at 20:56:02

A Friend has a 1980"Ironhead"  (1000cc) Sportster  -broken clutch cable, needed help ( not a wrench guy/not in great health) . While I had rebuilt and changed jetting in S&S carb this spring ,that seemed simple ,the clutch cable made me thank God I own a ZUK .
A Clymer book that covers all years from 1971 t0 1985 showed the clutches (3 different styles) spanning those years it failed to show  or tell about the 3 different of releases that are used to disengage the plates ,or any procedures . Removal of the clutch side cover  ,peg , shift level was needed . Three days of head scratching ,more than a dozen tries ,  and a few nasty words about Harley's and Clymer book  followed , but its running again. But it wasn't fun!

I replaced the clutch plates on my 89 883 and broke stuff due to a specialty part being needed. Had to mess with a bunch of extra things exclusive to Harley but finally got it back on the road. Then a few months later I had to replace the savage plates (weird I know) and laughed at how easy it was. Just a few bolts and she's done.
