Title: broken plate
Post by zevenenergie on 07/02/19 at 10:24:56

Dear members, I am working on my clutch. When cleaning the plates, I saw this. :'(

The aluminum under the plate has started to oxidize causing the friction material to become loose.

It is the thick plate of which there is only 1. The rest seems to be fine. Does anyone know the oem number of this plate?

Do you think the rest is still good or should I replace all plates?

Aluminum corrodes from water.......how did that get in there?

You can use any online parts retailer to look up the part numbers.

Or....you could order a complete set from Barnett or EBC.

Might this be a flood victim bike?...

Any idea on the provenance?...

Dave just nailed it ! Water in that engine for sure causing the corrosion and the adhesive they use to glue friction material to the plate is water soluble also causing delamination. Good call Dave !

Dear Members of the Selection Committee,

Thank you very much for the answers, in particular to dave, justin, ruttly, and serowbot. I just bought the Motor and there was no water in the crankcase but the engine was washed out with a solvent because it stinks like a patrol station /paint shop. Who knows what happened in there.

I'm going to order 6 new plates. :-*

Maybe the engine was stored in a damp environment? :-?

Since this engine was out of service for so long, it is important that you get it lubed up before you try and start it.

Since the engine is out of the frame - you really should be taking off the head cover and checking the cam and rockers for wear, and install a Versy head plug.  You can lube the cam and rockers then.  You should put Fogging Oil in the cylinder.....or a tablespoon of light oil.  Once you have the engine in the frame I would probably put a gallon or more of oil in the crankcase and turn the engine over to get things coated in oil - then drain the oil and refill to the proper level.

Is it worth tearing the engine down to remove the lose pieces of cork? That stuff can clog the oil pump and oil ports can't it?

Barnett sells a clutch kit with discs & steel plates & springs for around $100. I think I got mine on eBay. I have seen water in engine after pressure washing.

Soak the fiber discs in oil overnight before installation
