Title: Didn't have enough to buy it I guess
Post by WebsterMark on 07/01/19 at 11:16:13

Almost bought the farm, but I guess I was a little short of whatever currency is required....

Was out of town a couple weeks ago and decided to rent one of those battery powered scooters to scout our my walk the next morning. I was about 1/2 mile from our meeting location and needed to be there at 7 the next morning. It was a nice night out so I thought what the hell, I'll kill two birds with one stone. Have a little fun and make things easier in the morning.

Already had the scooter app on my phone because I've used them before in several major metro downtowns as a way to get around. So I'm zipping around an empty parking lot doing figure 8's and stuff. They are a blast to ride. The App said I'd gone .43 of a mile and it was 9:43PM when my ride came to an end. I was on a one way street going down a hill in the direction of where my morning meeting was. Apparently, I had finished riding around the parking lot and was mapping out my route for the next morning, but I don't remember that.

Next thing I remember is it's 11:15 PM. I'm being moved out of a CT scanner and back onto a gurney in an ER. Shirt had been cut off and I'm covered with blood. There is a hospital Chaplin with my cell phone calling my wife. Apparently someone opened a car door in front of me and I went over the top. Split my head opened on the curb.

Long story short, I'm back home and recovering. Bad concussion. This is first day I've been able to get on a computer for very long. Light sensitivity and dizziness when looking around. Every day is a little better than the day before so while I may have some minor long term consequences, I will not have any quality of life issues like some others do.

The human brain is an amazing and terrifying thing all at the same time. The ability to correctly interpret all the signals coming in from all the senses we have access to and then to interact with the physical world is amazing. The simple task of turning your head while maintaining focus on a single point without losing your balance is a learned skill. I've basically progressed from being a toddler last week learning to walk to this morning which is perhaps a stage equal to an awkward teenager in a growth spurt. Walls are bumped into, broke a couple of glasses and carpets are tripped over. I did manage to pee standing up over the weekend which was an amazing accomplishment I thought!

I'm sure you got the rundown from your medical provider that recent information about concussions have show they aren't anything to mess around with.

The days of no symptoms means no injury are gone when it comes to head-trauma.  I wish you luck on your recovery, keep that head safe and the stimulus low.

Truly sorry for the accident.

And truly glad, it happened in in this country.

If it would have been, Canada, UK, etc, you would be in much worse shape.
(Mexico, you would have not written this)

So, for now, follow Dr's instruction, be involved in your recovery, ask questions, Do some exercise,  Some,  drink plenty of water, have a goal, and change it often when you have reached the former one.
Stop booze & chew.
Have Sex when you can, (Yes it IS good for you)
Then you WILL, get better faster.

I'm taking a very scientific / engineered approach to the whole thing.

The human brain is the most amazing creation in the known universe. The mysteries behind how it functions are slow to reveal themselves. In my circumstance, fluid intake and what is in the fluid seems to be critical to balance, focus, hearing and dizziness.  The speed at which a healthy brain analyzes intake variables and directs thoughts and actions is incredible.

Consider everything that goes into a panic stop on a motorcycle because a cager did something stupid. All the actions your brain takes based upon what it perceives in front of you and based upon what your learned riding skills are and how quickly it recalls previous actions that would or would not be helpful in this particular millisecond.

Nothing on this planet is our equal. We stand in awe within the magnificence of our own bodies.

In my circumstance, fluid intake and what is in the fluid seems to be critical to balance, focus, hearing and dizziness.

As you are probably aware those are inner ear problems.  I would see a specialist and get checked out.

Best regards,

I'm home. Happened almost three weeks ago. Spent first night in the ER. Hospital didn't have any rooms to admit me and I didn't want to be transferred. They said I wouldn't die so I had a cabbie take me back to my hotel. Funny scene if you can picture it. They had to cut my shirt off and my pants were blood stained so they gave me a hospital robe to wear. Cab takes me to downtown ritzy hotel, about 7:30 am at this point. Valet guy helps me in the door. Two guys had just finished breakfast and were waiting for the elevator. I told them I'd had a rough night and asked if they could help me to my room which they did. Basically slept for two days until my daughter could get there to drive me back home. My company said they'd fly me back but they'd done enough already for me so I saw no sense in spending thousands for my screw up.

More physical therapy today. Hope to drive soon and get back on a bike. No scooter however....!
