Title: Deer me.......
Post by raydawg on 06/07/19 at 07:47:31

I am getting really tired of them eating up my landscape, etc......

What have you guys used to curtail these critters?

Thanks!

I've used solar motion sensor activated air horns, or sprinkler heads.

How much area are you talking about?

Well, they are rather tasty critters so just thin their numbers and stock your freezer.

I have heard that monofilament fishing line works - they can't see it at night and when they bump into it they get freaked out.

Around here....Hostas are called "Deer Lettuce" - they love it!

I ordered one of those motion activated water sprayers that works in day, or night.....

I better not hose myself  :-[

I am not talking about all my property, I will share some of it with them, just up close to my deck/patio, and side yard, where I grow plants that are not deer proof....

I can take two a year, buck or doe, but I am not a hunter.....  :)

Check the laws in your area on that. Here, I can shoot any animal that is damaging my property. Squirrels are the main pest here, they like tearing up screens. The neighbors all think that they are cute and feed them so they keep coming around looking for a handout. I started thinning them out with a high powered air rifle. The neighbors never hear a sound, all they know is that there aren't as many squirrels coming to their feeders anymore.

I have no qualms about others shooting what is their right.....
Its just not for me.
I shot a rabbit once, with a 22, at a very long distance.
I didn't think I would even hit it.....
When it tumbled over, I felt sick.

Years later, with a squirrel, same deal......

I won't even glance at road kill around here, which is a lot, baby deer is especially hard.

I guess I am a wuzz..... I dunno  :-[

Ray,
I have the same problem in my backyard.

I have been advised that urine works, we will see. Don't ask foe details.

Will report later. :)

If urine doesn't work I might try the sprinkler trick, since my sprinklers are located near my main problem area.

We bought some netting but haven't tried it yet.

Most critters don’t need to be killed. Do a little research , most just need a very unpleasant experience. Had a cat a while back hanging around my back yard , trapped it then threw it in the pool. Let it swim for awhile and right before it drown I put a board in the water for its escape. Haven’t seen that cat since. Those electric sprinklers work well but my dog kept coming back inside wet and mad.

I wasn't recommending that you shoot yourself in the a$$... just the deer... he won't be constipated either.

trivia;  30 years ago I drove from Louisville to Detroit along I-65, counted one deer corpse along the highway for every mile! Indiana was being overrun!  cheers! 8-)

I live on Whidbey Island, Island County.

I will start a new link with some recent pictures  ;)

Ray,
I love Whidbey Island. My son and his family live in Bothell, now just the two of them and a new puppy. We always visit Whidbey when we visit them.
lovely area.

Don't hit any deer on your travels.

Will shooting the deer with a paintball gun work as a deterrent?

You might be able to get some sporting fun in.....without any Bami bloodshed!

And I am with you Ray.....I went hunting as a kid.  I am a pretty good shot - but found I don't like watching them die.  Currently the only thing I kill on a regular basis is moles that invade my yard.  The moles around here are big as hamsters and they make a mess out of the yard.

MOLES......yuk!

I had lots of rats, BIG old ratz, with BIG arse tails.....

I shot those with a pellet rifle, but same thing, it bugged me afterwards, even tho I HATE rats.....

I still use a pest control service to this day to keep them under control.
Never had them get in the house, maybe moms weenie dachshunds are to thank for that.....
One of her little girls is a pitch black long haired one who will set frozen for hours, hunting, waiting, on a smell......
She has caught rats.

Dave,
I think the paintball gun idea has merit except for the fact that I never see any deer because they 'visit" at night. :'(

I'm like you and Ray I don't like killing anything.

Ray,
Point taken.
That sure looks like a great meal to me. I wish it were possible where I live but here in the desert we seem to have very few crabs for some reason. :'(
