So....what makes a fellow start filming just before this event?

I have been driving for a very long time, and not once have I filmed anything while behind the wheel.

I've wondered the same thing. Maybe he saw the guy pick it up and drop it as he approached.? He certainly stopped being a good cameraman when it came through the window...
