Title: Carburetor Jetting Questions
Post by mitchracing on 05/04/19 at 21:25:13

Got my 2002 savage put back together and fired up today
Running an aftermarket air cleaner and a free
Flowing muffler
However the jet doesn’t correspond to the charts I see for year.
Mine is a 155.  Exhaust turned a light gold after running a few minutes.
Jet is larger than what it says for year but have heard of others with this larger jet on 2001 models
Will need to check plug after running some miles but in the short term should I be bumping this up to a 160?
Also, I shaved the spacer in half

The golden color of your pipe seems normal , If your pipe turns blue ,it can indicate either a rich or lean condition . (lean- the  and motor runs  runs hotter. rich -  excess fuel is carried over and burns in the hot header pipe). so this is a clue that your jetting isn't right.
Reading the plug will tell you which, you must install a new plug, run the bike a speed ,and turn it off, and quickly read it . If the insulator tip is bright white, your lean . If it's black (carbon) it's rich. your looking for a light tan color . use a new plug each time you test.
You've opened  the air filter and exhaust creating higher air flow, so running a larger jet is the way to go, But the 155 jet, and half spacer  may even be to much, a lot depends on the air filter and exhaust you used as well as your elevation above sea level (oxygen content of the air being higher at sea level)  I wouldn't install a 160 jet until testing your present setup( reading the plug).
Try to make changes to jetting one at a time ,so you'll know what to reverse if they don't work out and make things worse.

Always start by checking and setting proper fuel/float level.  If it is too low the carb will meter lean on all circuits.  If it is too high the carb will meter rich on all circuits.  Jetting with improper fuel/float level is futile.

Be careful with Plug Chops as today's oxygenated fuels do not color plugs they way leaded fuels did in the old days.  After a hard pull in a high gear you should only see color down at the bottom of the electrode.  Checking plug color after normal riding is of no value.

For main jet we use the Mikuni Roll-Off Method:  http://www.mikuni.com/tg_main_jet_size.html

I can't see a mostly stock Savage ever needing anything bigger than a 150.  I went back to stock from a 155 on my bike and it ran way better.  I ended up going up one jet because I ride my bike in near freezing temperatures on my way to work in the spring and fall.

Also, I don't think the coloring on our pipes is completely accurate measure because it' a double walled pipe.  That's said, Batman is correct.  A hot pipe can be caused by a lean or rich condition.  (Everyone on here seems to think it's just lean conditions and wants to throw bigger jets.)  Sitting in traffic and air leaks with aftermarket mufflers are probably the real causes.

Besides, what's so wrong with blue pipes? :-? :-?

Please keep in mind, the 155 jet was what came on the bike, unchanged

That is not what was in it from the factory........somebody must have changed it.  The early carbs that used the #155 main jet also had a bigger air jet.....so maybe you need to see what air jet is in your carb if somebody has changed jets or put an early carb on your bike.

A few minutes of idling....or running down the highway in top gear?
