As I came into an Intruder/ Marauder 1400...
But, I like simple tech, one cylinder, one carburetor, belt/chain drives...
Any ideas on doing a transplant.
I'm thinking a fully built 650 and a chain or belt drive, maybe?

It can be done if you really wanted to do it, but I don't think the results will be worth the amount of work involved in that swap. You will basically be scratch building a bike to fit your motor, using parts from two different models. Shaft drive vs belt will make it hard enough. I don't think you realize how much work will be involved with that. And there will be differences in the wiring so you will have to change at least some of the wiring.

It is a nice idea, but I wouldn't touch that job with someone elses ten foot pole.

Not to mention that the hp gained by building the S-40 motor may be eaten up by the 170 pounds difference in weight of the Marauder.

I was thinking a gs/gl might make a better base to build on.
I'd want something with a longer wheelbase than the savage. The flat seat and tank style would suit me too.
Now to find a cheap one.

If I did jump into this, what bikes would make a good start?
I'm looking at gs and gl 550 - 800cc. The 650 and bigger might fit my 6ft self.
At worst I'll just keep the 1400 and gear it down, but it'll still be heavy.

The Savage/S-40 would make a great platform :) Multi cylinder bikes will probably not have enough frame height to fit our rather tall motor. It would be much easier to replace your seat with a HD Sportster seat moving you up and back , and/ or a set of forward controls, both of which have been done many times.

Unless they have changed the 1400, it is shaft drive so gearing changes are not going to be easy, if even possible. Less money and less work is to replace the ignitor with an aftermarket unit that allows you to change the rev limiter and advance curve. Then rejet the overly lean carbs. Supposedly that along with a less restrictive exhaust can get you up to about 90 hp.

The lower geared final drive of an 800cc will fit. I've read that the two upper gears of a 1500cc will also fit, giving it an overdrive. All together, that would make for a great, heavy, bike.
The bikes are capable of very high miles without a lot of maintenance.
I wish the carbs were easier to get at.

Yep, they do go a long way without needing anything but routine maintenance. Which is a good thing because as you have seen with the carbs, they are no fun to work on. Everything is in the way or in awkward places to get at.

Didn't know about the 800 ring and pinion fitting them. I knew that the Yamaha XS11 and XS 750's could be swapped like that, but it takes a bit of machining and isn't a simple bolt on job on those.
