Title: 92' LS 650, need advices regarding custom project
Post by Mosbi on 05/04/19 at 06:26:00

Hi everyone,

French dude here, I stumbled upon this forum many times while looking for info on the bike, mods and related stuff.
Last year I bought my first bike, a 92 ls 650 in a pretty decent state (well, so I thought) for a bit more than a grand. I already took down some parts before, to get it a fresh black paint (original was purple-ish), so both fenders, the side covers and the tank.
And now I kinda want to go for a bobber because 1) DIY is fun 2) I think it looks cool 3) why the hell not. So yeah, I came here to ask the community for advices and help.

So my plan is :
1) Getting rid of the rear fender
To do so I have to relocate what I assume is the starter relay, the rectifier, the brake/plate lights and plate.

I already planned to put the rectifier in the tool box, to do so I have a little bit of rewiring to do which I already started but failed miserably -> all lights work except the turn signals, trying to start the bike results in the whole thing shutting down which I assume is no goody.
So instead of grafting the wires were I could, I'd like to make a new clean wiring, at least for this part : any advice on that could be great (methodology, wire diameter, etc).

I guess for the (presumed) starter relay, I'll just keep the location and make a support that will take place where the fender was behind the seat. Brake/plate light and plate will surely be side-mounted.

2) Changing the handlebar
Nothing too tricky here I assume, I'll probably go for some small apes. If I'm correct, I only have to be careful with both electrical and clutch/brake wires length ?

3) Changing the seat
Same thing here, I guess I'll just have to make my mind about cutting the frame behind the seat to get a lower profile.

4) (maybe) Changing the muffler
Mine is I think in a not-so-good state, again an opinion on this could be helpful.

I'm also thinking about cleaning the carburator, since the last time the bike runned I had some issues with the engine : when accelerating and then releasing the throttle, the engine's rpm fell really low before going back to idle (sometimes the engine even stopped).
Also starting was always kind of a pain in the a** if my battery was not completely full, at some point I just push-started it all the time.
Belt needs a change too, since it's probably the original one and has cracks at some places.

So yeah, above that the only place to work I have is my appartment so it's a bit tricky, but I mainly do it for fun (but still do it properly). Also I kinda like the idea of knowing what's going on inside my ride.

Here's attached a pic of the bike before and current state, I'll probably post pictures of the parts I think might need to be changed to get your opinion on that.

Sorry for the long post, I guess. Thanks for reading and participating nonetheless !

I think the bike looks in great shape.  Way better than my 95 when I got it.  I think you have your work cut out for you, but you can easily do all that.

Its going to add up quick though. Belts are expensive, new longer cables get expensive.  So I think pretty quick you will be close to doubling your investment on the bike.  But Id say its worth it in the enjoyment of the build and riding what you have modified.

Have fun and keep us updated!
