I think YES, but you will also need the different style side rails (pillions) that have the spot for the backrest to sit in.

Post a WANTED ad in the marketplace to ask for parts, and of course you can search there too.

I had an 05, and now I have an 02. I think the two piece seat is much better, but the buckhorn handlebars create a very different riding position, so, maybe that's the difference or part of it. A RYCA builder will probably be your best bet.

I think maybe there's a subtle difference in how the back of the seat attaches on the rear fender between the 1-piece and 2-piece seats.
Anyone have more/better info?

The mount (and therefore, the fender) are different for the 1 piece (newer) seat and the 2 piece (older seat).
The older has a metal loop at the back that the pillion seat hooks into, and a threaded hole between the wire keepers for the pillion to bolt down.
The newer does not have the metal loop.  It has a threaded hole towards the back that the rear of the seat bolts to.l
The best way to see the differences is go on ebay and look at the different years.

To maybe help clarify for Cushman, the 05 appears to have the single seat, not the two piece, correct?  Images online seem to show that the 05 was the first year for the single seat, with the 04 having the split seat.

Either way, the backrest with the "sissy bar" looks to be the same regardless of the seat as it does not bolt to the bottom seat at all, only bolts into the side pillions.  So, if older model side pillions fitted for the backrest fit an 05 then the seat itself is a non-issue unless you want to add the backrest and wanted to convert the single piece seat to a two piece.

So, in summary, newer bikes have the backrest...you may have just seen it in pictures in older models only for some reason.  I have an '08 and have one on mine.

Stew.. you sure about that?  Or am I misreading your post?

The single piece seat and no back rest pillion handles were introduced in 2005.
You can mix and match them, like your 2008 shows.  But the pillion handles on your 2008 bike are not 2008 pillion handles!  You (or someone) put those on.

Here are links to the fiche for the 2004 and 2005 models
2004 has the split seat and back rest.
https://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/l/suz/5909178887a8660fa09ff519/2017-ls650-b-parts

2005 has a single seat and no back rest.

And, yes, I know that the rear fender LOOKS the same in both years on the fiche.   Trust me, they are not.

I have read that the bolts that mount the pillion handles are not the same length, but I can't attest to that.  The Suzuki PNs are different.

So:
You can mount a backrest on a NEWER (2005 and higher) bike if you get the pillion handles, backrest, etc.
You CAN NOT mount a 2 piece SEAT on a NEWER bike because the fender doesn't have the right mount points.
If Cushman is OK keeping his one piece seat, do that and put on the pillion handles and backrest from an older model.. just like you did!

Youaguyz, you are correct 100%.  I just maybe wasn't saying it that clear.

Mine is a 2008 which was stock with no backrest. I purchased a set of pillions and backrest from a TX dealer online on a clearance sale and presume it was advertised at the time (2012) for fitting '05 and newer models. I can't remember about the bolt lengths, but I replaced all 3 of my under-the-fender pillon bolts with button head allens and just got what I needed at that time from the local ACE.

Agreed 100%, you cannot fit a two piece seat on a one piece fender (or visa versa) without modifications to the fender and/or seat.
