Title: Mag Wheels
Post by MMRanch on 01/31/19 at 09:44:32

I rolled the S-40 out of the shop today with Mag Wheels on it.

The GS550 (1981 ish) has a wide rim and a different pattern than the GS450 does , it also has a "LARGER" rear brake shoe so I went with the 550 version .

Here is a picture:

The rear pulley didn't fit without some modifying , but a variable speed Jig Saw with a course blade made modifying the aluminum pulley easy.

So , here's what posible :

MM, that looks really nice. Good job!

I've got an extra set for the GS450 now that I didn't use  ... thanks to Dave's post on tire and rim width .

I went with the 110/90-16 rear on a 2.75" rim (same as our factory width).    The tire looks narrow next to a the 140/90-15 I pulled off .    The front tire is a 90/90-19.    The set-up reminds me of the 1970-ish bikes where a  3.25 front would be matched with a 4.00 rear .    Best I remember they handled just fine ... I'll find out when this cold snap fades out !   ::)

Looks good! Did you go with a 2 piston caliper, and or a bigger disc, or stick with the stock front brake?

Badwolf , I used the disk you sent and the dual clamper , that Dave sent (I was glad to have them both) .   That along with the bigger 550 shoe on the rear , makes for "REAL" Stopping power !   ;)

It looks really good, I am surprised at just how much it changed the appearance of the bike.....GOOD JOB !

I've got a pair of SV650 front dual piston calipers and I compared them to the one Dave sent.    It would have taken more length from the F.Forks to use the larger disk.   The larger dia. disk would have been nice but the right-way would have been to use the SV650 forks.   I did't want to go that far.   :P
The modified dual piston caliper that Dave made has a lot more stopping power than the factory single piston ever did.

With the long "Rake" of the LS650 , I don't want to be doing "Stopies" anyway.   ;D

I went with the larger vented disc and made a extended bracket for the dual piston caliper. ( had to make a bracket anyway, why not go with the bigger disc?)
Two fingers REALLY slows me down in a hurry! Tried 3 fingers hard and locked-up the front tire at 30mph!
I am building a ''Batwing'' style faring (slowly) and when it is done I'll use a 100/90 16 tubeless on the front. The wheels are off a 02' Suzuki Maruader.
The front rim is 3'' wide and gives the tire a WIDE profile.
Dual piston caliper,
larger disc,
3'' smaller wheel & tire!
I'll be able to stop on a dime & give you 9 cents change!

OK , just don't bend the forks !   ;D

I hit the front brake on the guzzi really hard one time with a tire (SportsDemon) that was about bald , and it ripped the tire.   Yea , about 1/2" wide tear about 1/8" deep.    Its a big dia. dual piston type (V-7 II)
The anti lock turned the brake off then on again one time.   But I dropped some speed in a hurry !  ;)
That was last Spring while ridding with Dave and Stew (near Suches , GA.) , It's really hard to get and stay out in front of those two when the game is on !   It could have been the machine and not the rider  or I wouldn't have been in front in the first place ???    ::)

be safe !  :)

Lancer , you know our MOPADS won't even do the speed limit on those back roads !     :-X

But ,

I wish you could have been with us !   :)
Those same "MOPADS" could gain enough speed on the down-hill side of the mountains to be fun !!   ;D

Ray , you should know "I don't sin on the strait-a-ways , only on the curves" .   ;)

Its on those mountain- roads that don't have Strait-a-Ways that we get into trouble .   :P

Nice job MM , I really like it. It's goes perfectly with everything else you've done to the bike. I would own that bike and not need to change anything.

Ruttly

Thank you !  :)

That is a modified HD Fat-Boy seat , Old Dina boards , Sportster wide Bars , and a lot of home made stuff !   ;D

A 4.5 gal fuel tank is one thing I want , but cutting the frame might be the only way to get it ?   :-?

Looks like my kinda travelin machine. The time is nearing to selling a few bikes and building another Savage and what I picture in my mind , it will look like your bike.  8-)

:)

Your an inspiration Versey !    and your bike looks good too !

You ever solve the 4.5 gal. tank problem , I want to be the first to see it .  ;)

..................................................

That bigger rear brake was my biggest surprise so far.

I had to get inventive with the rear pulley and used an aluminum tent peg for the spacer.    You must have had a similar experience .

I love the look and I am thinking I would like to do that.  So what is the main reason why the 450 wheels are not used?

Title: Re: Mag Wheels
Post by MMRanch on 02/02/19 at 21:21:56

engineer

The 450 rear wheel is a narrower width rim.
But , the brake shoe is the same as the Savage .   So really the 450 is the easier way to go .    You just slip the Savage brake right into the 450 hub and it fits !   :)
On the pulley side , the mounting bolts for the chain sprocket are on a smaller dia. circle.
I have 1981 wheels (1 set 450) and (1 set 550) they have different spoke patterns.
The 550 has the same sprocket as the 450 does so :

I had to slot the mounting holes in the (belt) pulley to let the mounting bolts through.    Its aluminum and easy to do.    Getting the pulley centered was easy too , just measure the gap and make/find a spacer to fit.   ;)

The front is even easier :   just 1/4 inch spacer on the calipier mount , and your done !

I've got about $100. in my 450 set if your interested ?   plus shipping.    I looked at Daves post about rims and tires for the Cafe Bikes is why I went with the 550's  ,  Shinko makes a 110/90-16 that would be just fine on the 450 rim - it took a lot of "Doing" to make that 110/90-16 grab on the wide 550 rim and blow up to seating.   But I already had the tire on hand so .....  ::)

The 110/90-16 will look a bit skinny for those use to seeing 140/90 tires on the bike - but it is plenty of tire for the Savage and I ran a 110/80-18 for a while and it never broke loose or failed to provide the needed traction.  Old Norton's and Ducati's and Triumphs and BMW's all had more weight and more power than the Savage - and they were all using tires that were 4.00 or 110 in width.

I am sure when you wear this tire out, you can find something just a bit wider - and knowing how many miles you put on a bike it should be some kind of a touring tire.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

I got on my back brake today and the "brake-stay-lever" broke !   :(

The hub spun around and the "spline-ed-nub" that the brake lever fastens to - broke off from the hub .

bad , bad , bad       Yea , I could just buy a new spline-ed-nub ?

..............................

That 110/90-16 was really hard to get seated on the 550 rim.   I used ratchet straps all the way around the tire and even then got lucky.

I'm going to give the 450 rim set a try and use the original brake stay hub thing .   I'm sure the tire will be a lot easier to mount on the narrower 450 rim.   Next time I'll go up to the 120/90-16  Avon-AM-26 tire.
If it wears the middle really quick I'll go back to the 550 rim set.

So , its back to the shop with it for round two !    ::)

I used a 1983 SUZUKI GS550L REAR WHEEL.
The hub and pulley from the savage fit right in with no mods.

Thanks Versey , the 1981 that I used lacks a little to be desired !  ;D

Just ordered a rear wheel and new bearing for a 1983 this time !  :-?

Should be here in a week ?
