Title: Remote controlled electronics have the same issue
Post by Oldfeller on 12/03/18 at 05:21:39

So, what is the issue?   All my gadgets have a remote now-a-days, it is hard to find one that doesn't have remote on off function any more.   All my VCRs, monitors, TVs, anything electronic for the den in other words.   They all have remotes now and they even sell little over the armchair arm pocket holders to hold all the remotes you have to keep track of now.

It is what it is, but what's the real rub with this proliferation of wireless controllers?

Actually, it is a common failure mode (a short end of life failure mode) of the IC switch that takes the remote signal from your device's receiver and then turns the power on and off.

Take my wife's favorite TV sitting in the den, it is a big 'un that pulls like 6-8 amps to crank itself up initially and this TV wound up burning out its IC switch on the motherboard at approximately 1.5x of the TV's warranty period.   Expensive electronics, known Issue, known fix sorta thing on a 48"  Sanyo flatscreen TV.

The problem is so common it even has YouTube instructions on how to replace the $90 motherboard that is affected.

Let me give you some generic easy do  troubleshooting and repair tips that total $13 to fix your busted TV.

OR IF YOU ARE SMART, YOU DO THIS TRICK FIRST THING WHILE IT IS BRAND NEW AND COMPLETELY AVOID THE ISSUE HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Troubleshooting:

it won't turn on  -------------  you are screwed, replace the board or else buy a new TV.
it won't turn off  -------------  lucky you, buy the switch below and add another gadget to your remote collection.

Prevention:  ------------- buy the switch below and install it when you put the new device in place.   Then, if it blows you have a $13 easy to diagnose and fix problem, rather than a motherboard replacement or TV replacement affair.

In a nutshell, large expensive electronics like TVs have remote controls.   The IC switch on the motherboard (that actually handles the off on current that the remote actuates) likes to burn out early.  Poor man's solution, move the remote/IC switch action to the little plug box shown where it is easy to troubleshoot and cheap to replace.

Leave your real remote alone except for changing settings, etc.   Start/stop your TV with the little on off remote.

8 amp TV?...
Are you sure?...

Worthwhile time to upgrade from such a power sucker.

Biggest current draw is during start up.   Short term draw only, it only pulls 40-70 watts when running steadily.

Sad thing is the remote signal circuit IC power side switch is seeing this heaviest draw at every cold turn on cycle, which is also why big electronics start up circuit IC switchs fail sooner than you would think they would.

It might be good to look into a inrush current limiter.

Hindsight is 20-20, but the two previous big screen TVs died suspiciously like this same symptom set.

Only one of them was due for technological replacement, the other was just an unexpected $350-$500 out of pocket expense.

The theory behind the fix is sound, as the switch in the receptacle plug module is a more rugged, higher current rating IC switch than the little IC switch soldered on the motherboard.

The heavier plug module mounted IC switch component logically should live longer just starting up the TV ......  certainly it will be a lot easier to test/troubleshoot and much much much cheaper to replace if it does go bad.

Just ordered another one and got it heading my way to cover another TV ......   $13 is cheap protection for a known issue that costs $350-500 when it hits you.
